Any scotch whisky drinkers out there?

I'm not a Scotch drinker, but play regularly with 2 guys are hard core, and they swear by "Balvienie" (spelling?). Haven't seen that mentioned in this topic (don't even know for sure it's a single malt, or even a Scotch), but thought I'd get your opinions on that so I can inform them if they're drinking good stuff or swill :)!

Balvenie is one of my favorites. It is so smooth in all varieties. Also a big fan of Dalwhinnie.

I tried my hand at the peaty Islay Scotches, but never fell in love. I occasionally have a glass when out at a whiskey bar, but not very often.

Islay whiskey tends to be my favourite style, I like the peatyness and my favourite is Laphroig.

Glenlivet 15 yr. French Oak Reserve. Good price for a high quality scotch

This is one of my go-to's.

My latest pickup was a bottle of 12 y.o. Highland Park. It's ok, but not great. I had some Glenfiddich a couple weeks ago while out at our department Christmas luncheon. That was pretty good.

And after all the mentions of Lagavulin in this thread, I may have to look for a bottle of that to try. It was this forum that turned me on to one of my favorite bourbons (Blanton's), so I'm hoping you guys might go 2-for-2 for me.

I tried my hand at the peaty Islay Sctoches again, and they're growing on me. I bought a bottle of Jura Superstition, and enjoyed it quite a bit. I followed it with bottles of Lagavullin 16 year, Laphroaig 10 year and Bowmore small Batch (finished in Bourbon Cask). The Lagavullin was my favorite, followed by the Jura, Laphroaig, then Bowmore. The Bowmore is good (still working through that one), but a little bland on flavor. The Lagavullin is fantastic. Much more refined in its flavor than the Laphroaig. While I can drink that one, it is a little rough around the edges for me. The Jura was good, but not overly remarkable. All were drank neat (the only way to drink good Scotch).

Curious about the fellow liquor snobs among the WRXers. I won't drink anything outside of single-malts these days...not even beer or wine. What are your personal favorites?

Lagavulin 16 is my personal favorite but I love anything from Ardbeg and Laphroaig. I never liked any whisky until I had my first peaty single malt (Laphroaig 10), and it was love at first taste. Not a big fan of the sweet Highlands, Speysides, Bourbons, etc.

Love scotch! My favorite are the Islay's that you listed. My favorite though is bunnahabhain 12!! It's incredible..non chill filtered no color added. Wonderful all around single malt..it's not your typical Islay however...if your going to try it, read up about it

For Islay I let the bottle and the scotch sit in the glass a few minutes before drinking.

I take a whiff as well while waiting. It gets my palette ready for the peatiness.

Me too. I just wait one minute for every year of the bottle. Sometimes I can't wait though :)

You can't go wrong with Ardbeg & Laphroaig. I've also been known to walk with Johnnie as well.

Cant go wrong with those two if you're a peat monster!

Or you could go with peat monster! Lol never had it but I heard good things. I don't think it has an age statement if that matters to you

I'm more of a Bourbon/American whiskey kind of guy. I have to be careful w/Scotch because I'm not that educated on it and there's a lot of different styles and not all are to my liking. However I absoultely love, love The Balvenie Double Wood. Great stuff IMO.

The Scotch Whisky Association is insistent that good malt whisky needs a splash of water to fully release the bouquet and flavour, and I agree with them.

......and anyone who puts ice in their whisky is killing the flavour.

Dont be so dogmatic.

I like a johnnie black before dinner sometimes. But with ice and a splash of water.

I may go out drinking, rare these days, and have a few, but Im definitely having ice in those if Im having a few.

I may want to sip some single malt, but still want a cube in there.

Or, I may want it neat, after a meal, or just hanging out.

All scotch is good. No need to put rules on how to enjoy it.

I used to drink scotch, Glenlivet 18 was my favourite bang for the buck. Tasty and not super expensive. I may buy another bottle just to have.

Lately I've just been buying cheap *ss bourbon and making Manhattans.
