Best Driver for 2017

Recommended Posts

M2: Been testing it because everyone had a love affair with it, actually performs the worst of my comparisons.

Epic: Just went for test drive, not impressed with the numbers, think it sounds awful too.

Cobra F7+: by far best results of my comparisons. Matte black looks smashing and the sound is spot on. Get the best accuracy and distance with it.

Going to get a full bag fitting at club champion Wednesday. I'm going in as biased as I possibly can so that the numbers can speak for themselves. I'll post who the winner is

Took my son to the local golf shop this evening to get him a new driver for the upcoming HS golf season. He'd been using my old Ping G30 and was getting OK results from it at the end of last year but now he's outswinging the stock R flex shaft. He hit the '16 and '17 M1 and M2, Epic, F7, 917 and Triton all with their respective stock S flex shafts. Best results were between the '16 M2 and the Triton, by a fair margin, easily 10+ yards longer with these two. He then grabs a Ping G LS Tec out of the used bin and commenced to crush 5 drives in a row. This was a 9* head with the Tour 65 S shaft. Then he got serious about the Ping, M2 and Triton and the Ping won out. He really liked the look and feel of the M2 and the Triton was his first choice because it looked cool but he couldn't ignore the results. Needless to say I saved a good chunk since the Ping was a demo, and just goes to show you should hit everything and let the clubs provide the proof, not the advertising or what the latest and greatest/most expensive on the rack is. I'm sure if we had played around with other shafts in the three clubs the results could have been different, but not significant enough to make it worth the effort.

So I guess the best driver of 2017 for this 16y/o junior golfer is the Ping G LS Tec.

Smart Father and Son. Great Price, Super forgiving, and extremely long. About everything one looks for in a Driver. Your assessment is correct that pick what performs for the golfer not the at nauseous reviews by internet postings.

Did he try to mix and match shafts with different heads? I wonder how much of him performing best with the ping was because of the shaft.

No, just the stock offerings from each mfgr. The Ping Tour 65 is their "upgraded" shaft, not sure what the particulars are on it but from what I can tell it works really well with this head. I've been playing the G30 and G for a while and from all the searching I did no one has been able to come up with much that can outperform the stock Ping shafts (in Ping heads). I did play an Oban Devotion all last year in the G30 and it was good, but probably not overwhelmingly better than the 419 shaft. Either way, I doubt the Ping shaft in another head would be any better or worse than anything else.

He was averaging about 245 carry and 270ish total on the monitor, and more importantly, keeping it within 10yds of centerline the whole time with the Ping, so he's happy with that. We went to the range today and he was rolling up to the 265 marker on nearly every drive. The fact that they were on line enough with the pole to gauge the distance was a really good sign.

Obvious talent your son has but I too find Ping straighter than most.

Yeah, I wish someone had me playing at that early of an age. I got him playing when he was about 10 and he's developed a very good swing over the last several years. I can remember the first time he hit a driver over 150yds, and now we're looking for 300... I'm easily two clubs shorter than he is on most shots, and he points that out every chance he gets.

My regular playing partners are bittersweet when I bring him out for a round. They like watching him play but aren't always stoked about getting schooled by a kid who doesn't even have his driver's license yet.

All about fairways for me. And do I like how my best drives feel? Distance is in the ballpark with every driver I try. There are differences but they are not major. I currently have two: a Titleist 917 D2 with a Hzrdus Red 75g 6.0 shaft, 44.75 inches. Love the shaft and head. Feel is fantastic. Also have a TaylorMade Aeroburner TP Mini with Matrix HD7 stiff, 43.5 inches (2015). That club feels so good and I like the flat lie angle, harder to hit it left. On a lot of holes, it is all I need. If I were to try a new driver, I like the Cobra LTD and hit it well in a demo. And Krank is coming out with a 7.0 that looks pretty sweet. With all due respect to Callaway Epic, all Krank heads are one piece so the "connected" crown and sole is not new, it is only new with face insert drivers. The Krank is known for tight dispersion, which is pretty much my main criterion.

Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond 10.5 w/Diamana TB 60S

PXG GEN6 5 wood w/Diamana S-plus 70 stiff

Yamaha RMX VD 7 wood w/Diamana S-plus 70 stiff

Callaway Mavrik Pro hybrid (22) w/Aldila Tour Blue 85 stiff hybrid

Wilson Staff Model CB 5-G w/DG s300 shafts

Edel T grind 54 w/Nippon 125 wedge shaft

Fourteen RM-12 58 w/Dynamic Golds400

Axis1 Rose putter, 34 inches

I drove around looking to test drive all the new drivers. M1 M2 epic SZ ltd f7+. Never made it to store got sidetracked wife was texting me kids were yelling in the back seat. The epic sounded and felt the worst, m2 m1 looked weird ltd already got that in bag so yeah it's I guess epic, settled on f7 plus it's head cover gave me the best numbers. No doubt sleeper of 2017. Best driver I have ever hit into a net can't wait for the snow to clear here in California this rain is driving me nutty.

F9 driver
king LTD 3 wood
F6 hybrid. vts silver
Z565. recoil 95
Pur wedges
