Grand Rapids/Lansing Michigan Trip

Hello Michigan folks,

Group of 4 of us are going up to Michigan for a little 5 days golf-til-we-drop trip. Looking to play a lot of golf. Looking for any type of input on courses and restaurants in the area. We have a rough plan of trying to get tee-times on the fly and try to save some cash that way. Here is our skeleton itinerary:

Drive up

Saturday - Medalist (all you can play)

Lansing

Sunday - Eagle Eye/Hawk Hollow or Timber Ridge

or something around GR (See Courses below)

Monday - Staying in GR

Combo of the following

Macatawa

Ravines

Hawkshead

Thorneapple

Pilgrims Run

Grand Haven

Tuesday -

Tullymore and St Ives (already booked)

Any help is appreacited.

Looks nice. I'd say Saturday and Sunday are solid, I've not played Timber Ridge but have played Hawk Hollow and enjoyed it, and Eagle Eye is supposed to be fantastic. For Monday a few of the courses are 45 minute drives from GR, so I'd say start at Thorneapple and pick one of Macatawa, Ravines, Hawksead and Pilgrims Run. Macatawa is ok but fairly blah, I've not played Hawkshead but I've heard good things, haven't played Ravines either. I LOVE Pilgrims Run, just a fun course in the woods, great play and one I always try to do when I'm in GR, but it's about 40 minutes or so north of town. If you're going from GR to the Tullymore area on Monday night Pilgrims Run would be the one I'd do as it's on the way.

Ravines - Great Track. We have played it every year when our group goes to the West Side.

Hawkshead

Thorneapple

Pilgrims Run - Great Track as well. Played 4 or 5 times. Never a disappointment

Grand Haven - I'm assuming Grand Haven Golf Club. Nice course as well, but a little unnerving for people who don't hit the ball straight. I love this track, but some of our group do not because of tight tree lined fairways. Definitely a money maker for the straight hitters..... :)

Tuesday -

Tullymore and St Ives (already booked)

Any help is appreacited.

See comments above. The Meadows at Grand Valley State would also be a good addition. If you plot out your plan, you can hit two a day...

Eagle Eye is an excellent course. You won't be disappointed. I wasn't enamored with Pilgrims, but it was a solid layout.

Medalist is really nice. You will enjoy it. Recommend looking into Darkhorse Brewery in Marshall after your rounds or heading to Lansing and eating there.

Lansing: Either play Eagle Eye/HawK Hollow or Eagle Eye/Forest Akers West. First option is nice because you are same location.

Monday I would definitely pick Thornapple Pt. with any of your other choices. Closest and probably most fun track in my opinion. I drive by it everyday on highway on my way to work and love that hole that plays next to River, except when the geese ? all over. I've played all those except Medalist, and all are amazing top 25 Michigan courses.

Cw, besides thornapple, what other public GR courses would you rather play than hawkshead or ravines?

Quail Ridge - ADA

Kauffman - GR

Thornapple Pointe - GR

Boulder Creek - Belmont

I can't speak to the current conditions of any of these, but I've played all multiple times and enjoy all more than either Hawkshead or Ravines.

So many courses available in GR, if I drove up 4 hrs from Cleveland, I would never waste the time driving over to the Lakeshore for golf. Courses all over the place to pick from.

I'm of a different opinion than cw. I would be disappointed if I traveled from Cleveland to Michigan for the purpose of golf and played Kaufman, boulder creek, or quail ridge over hawkshead and ravines. Are they THAT great? No, but they are more on same level as thornapple as other public courses in GR are a step or 2 below.
