I would say getting 288 yards is next to impossible with a 90ish swing speed.

Ok.. not here to argue, but generally speaking distance is 2.5x your swing speed and that assumes a good center strike that allows the maximum ball speed for that swing speed. (1.5 would be great, many amateurs experience 1.3 - 1.4) Carry distance for 100mph swing is 250. Elevated tees, hard fairways, severe slopes, high heat, etc, the ball will go further, but the physics do not change on what is possible on a level playing hole. anything additional is due to extenuating circumstances and nothing more.

It was a blind landing spot so it may have taken a hard bounce.

I was thinking that the L shaft flex may have had something to do with it.

Maybe the shaft loaded and unloaded perfectly and it increased the ch speed.

Looking at the chart it seems my CH speed is closer to 95-100. Using range balls I usually carry the ball 230 to 240.

I assume the balls are not as good as a gamer so add 10 yards,

Unfortunately I dont have access to a radar but was using a garmin truswing which was saying 90 mph.

Agreed. My example is 40 years of playing, both as an amateur and pro, and about to turn 60 next year. This year I finally took an HONEST look at my SS and carry distance and I'm in the 95-97 mph range and I carry my driver in the 235-240 range. I still have an aggressive transition from my playing days and I typically have a negative AOA of -2 to -4 degrees. All verified by Trackman outdoors..

My best shafts are low spin, high launch shafts similar to the GD AD DI 6S and have recently fell in love with the Ping G400 LST with the stiff Alta CB shaft. It seems to solve a lot of issues for me and I've tried dozens of drivers over the past 3 years. My current gamer is a Cobra Fly Z + with the Aldila Tour Green S which has been awesome as well.

Want to see how far you hit it? Go spend $20.00 and put a Cobra Connect grip on your driver and the app on your phone. You may be surprised and possibly disappointed by how far you really hit it :swoon:

Good luck in your search but SS it's just one element of picking the correct shaft....

I played the course again. Sadly not as far this time. The hole measures just over 300 yards with a pond in front. But that drive was in the water.

There is some undulation so maybe it took a kick.

How old are those swing speed distance charts?

Would be interested to find out what club shaft combo others are using.

Agree, not possible, but people can sometimes swing faster as well. It depends upon many factors.

At 95mph with 5 degree up, a golfer can get 276 yards under ideal conditions, but if he swings 100mph for that one shot then it's possible to get 288 with near perfect conditions.

It's a freakishly long shot, but possible.

I'm in the mid 80s to low 90s...and i've never hustled one out past 250 unless it's rolling downhill. according to GPS, my TOTAL driving distance is 220-240. so, there's one of two things happening...you either swing harder than you think, or you're not measuring the distance correctly.

this post is pretty much the answer to this thread. If someone has say a 93 mph swing there is no way to reach 280 yards unless you get 40 yards of roll down hill. My swing speed is approximately 93 mile per hour and when I stripe it I approach 250 yards but that is generally with a bit of roll out. For some reason many golfers overestimate their driving distance.

I agree. i think the course is padding their yardages to appear longer.

I am having to hit less than driver to make sure I dont hit into a pond guarding a 288 yard par 4.

I hit my 4 hybrid to the 100 yard maker and flew my 52 wedge over the green.

Something smells.

I will try adding a gps app to my phone and see whats up.

The courses don't pad the distances on purpose. They want to let divots heal and move the tees around and generally move the flag accordingly. In general, the course distances are based upon the USGA tee marker distances, the intended path and the center of the green.

That's a good strategy for a water guarded green. If there's a pond 250 yards from the tee box, most people won't be hitting driver anyway.

The hole is possibly designed to be circumvented by shorter hitting players and that adds the 20 or 30 yards you feel is missing?

My average driver SS in 96-97. I have a shortish backswing, with a 6 degree positive AoA. If the course is firm, I play a Matrix OZIK TP6HD that carries about 230 with low spin, so I get significant roll. If the course is soft, I use an Oban Kyoshi Purple 65g shaft that spins more, with carry about 240 (and less roll). Both are stiff flex.

And, FYI, I practice regularly with a Flightscope XiTour, so I know my numbers cold. Our range has Taylormade range balls, and their numbers are actually pretty close to on course performance, carry wise, where I play Taylormade TP5 balls.

I'm sorry but this chart is not very accurate. It is based on averages for a swing speed and doesn't break down AoA, Launch angle, etc. SS is just one factor of many. This chart doesn't show min/max distance either. All these numbers are derived based on the average loft, and average distance for that loft.

Below is a more accurate chart based on trackman data, that shows what you should be getting based on given factors.

b16cd3f5_trackman-driverfittingchart.png

I would really caution against basing things off SS alone, as it is not a defining factor in real distance. Keep in mind wind, cold, and wet weather totally kill distance as well.

For the OP, I would highly recommend figuring out what your AoA and launch angle is and work from there to get them as optimal as possible for your SS, which is where you SS really comes into play. Then select a shaft that gives you optimal trajectory. For example, low launch if it is too high, mid and/or high launch if it is too low. I also recommend tracking shots so you have real data if you don't already. There is a real difference between a launch monitor and a real course. Being able to compare the two will give you a more realistic idea on what will work better for you. Even better if you are able to use your current driver and see what and if there is a difference between launch monitor and real course.

I think I'm shy of this ss, and benefit from a bit more whip in a regular flex shaft. Poster, what happens when you try a reg flex? The OP said he's having success with a L flex, which is one or two levels down than you would predict at 88 ss. What happens when we keep moving down flex? I know that the most reliable club in my bag right now is a 5h with an M flex in it, I just kill it.

I don't know, I had a True Spec fitting and bought what was recommended. The same fitter also did my irons the prior season (about a year ago). I was playing KBS Tour S shafts in Taylormade Tour Preferred MC irons and he fit me in PXG 0311T irons with KBS C-Taper Lite R shafts, bent one degree weak (so same lofts as the TM irons I was playing). I gained 8-10 yards of carry, depending on the iron, with the switch.

In my experience I have to go way way outside my flex range to lose control caused by shaft only... (Not swing fault)....am pretty smooth swinger

Had few buddies who have hard trans and late release and play fairly smooth or soft stiff driver shafts and swing in 115-120 mph range (well over 300 usually in total distance)with no problems...they like the feel

And I think that's the key.....if it feels good

Also have a buddy who plays x100 iron shafts and swings under 100 with driver.....and he struggles with them big-time, lol
