I think as a proportion of the population, South Koreans generally just love golf, and especially women's golf much much more. Also, Park Se Ri did a lot to spur this wave on. Even my mom who is not a golfer knows who Park Se RI is.

i guess it's getting similar to Japan about 20 years ago when golf was not considered a sport but a religion!!

They work harder so they’re better and take less selfies promoting their instagram profile. No participation trophies where they came from.

Oy. Curious, how many selfies are too many? There are plenty of Korean pros with active social media accounts, e.g. In Gee, So Yeon, Mi Hyang, Hee Young, Jenny S.

With only few exception, they are privileged kids with parents who are willing to spend enough money to get the best golf education. No more Cinderella stories. Kids who survive would have decent chance of making into KLPGA. From there on, better players would have a chance to play in a bigger stage.

Kinda like youth basketball programs, tennis programs etc here in the states. We will not see another Jiye Shin, Williams sisters or John Starks. Money makes great young athletes these days.

How much money? As far as I'm aware, the top women players in the world do not come from extremely wealthy parents. Yes, money is needed to pay for instruction, entry fees, etc. However, it's not outside the reach of the 99 percenters.

Reading Lydia Ko's background, I do not draw the conclusion that she was privileged. She worked hard from a young age with good instruction. While other kids were out doing other things, she was practicing, and playing rounds. The money from the New Zealand Golf certainly helped, but her dedication to the game starting from the age of five is what ultimately helped her become the youngest #1 player in the world.

For those asking about the South Korean men. A 19 year old South Korean just won this weeks Web.com event by four strokes. Of course some time in the next few years he will have to take two years off golf to serve in the SK military.

The inevitable question that always comes up when discussing Korean dominance in women's golf. Where are the men? I would argue they are doing disproportionately well considering the size of the population, the short length of time Korea has even known about golf, and the golf resources they have to work with. And as Shilgy alluded to, they seem to be gaining more presence across all the major men's tours.

Korea seems to have the best formula for developing elite athletes that i have seen so far..

it would seem easy enough for other countries to copy what they're doing and maybe do just as well but it isn't happening basically because few other countries have the same discipline and culture to the same degree..

only Japan and China come close and they have had some successes too but not as much as Korea..

we can discuss this endlessly but to me it boils down to these two traits which Korea has in spades..

PS: they have also dominated women's Olympic archery for almost 30 years with much the same formula/program and am sure there will be other sports to follow for them to dominate in the future..

Koreans are predicting a big year for In Gee; because 2018 is the Year of the Dog.

In Gee was born in 1994, which is also a Year of the Dog.

2017 was the Year of Chicken; and fellow chicken-ers Sung Hyun Park, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas had big years.

But according to Chinese Astrology, it is the opposite. Maybe it works differently for non-Chinese. :dntknw:

"According to Chinese astrology, people in their zodiac year are believed to offend Tai Sui, the God of Age, and incur his curse. It is believed to bring nothing but bad luck. Therefore Chinese astrology followers pay special attention to their conduct every twelfth year of their lives, i.e. in their birth sign years."
