Shot 73 & Hit 5 Greens

This is not good

Hit 5 greens, 22 putts, 11 fairways, 73. I suck at hitting irons, but I kill the driver. This kind of a rant, why can't I hit more greens. Anyone else have this problem?? Obviously my short game is pretty good, but I really feel I could go low if I hit more greens.

i'm sure if you would have hit more greens you would have had quite a few more putts...

 

73 with only 5 GIR is pretty darn good... you must be handy with a wedge...

trying putting the weight on your left foot when hitting irons. did wonders for me..(high 70s to low)

I had the same problem...killing the driver but aggravate the crap out of myself with a second shot iron hit fat!!!!! :tongue:

 

Took a lesson and it turns out I was straightening my right leg on the back swing with the iron...concentrated on turning onto the right leg and feeling as if my weight was on my right instep/heel and suddenly hitting perfect irons!! Due to my set up with my driver I was transferring my weight correctly...

 

Now if I could just avoid that odd blow up hole I could break 80!!!!

i've had similar days, especially in high school.

 

i shot ridiculous scores like that without hitting many greens. i think the turning point came when i stopped trying to pound every iron into every green.

 

now, i just try to take a tad more club and shorten up a little bit. seems to be working for me.

I think you should focus on the positives and not the negatives. Don't always think that something needs fixing. 73 is an awesome score. And obviously you've got one heck of a good short game. I'd take a good short game over just about any other aspect of the game any day of the week.

I'll trade too- I shot the same score as yours yesterday and hit 12/14 fairways and 15 greens. Two three stab bogeys, 11 birdie putts from 5 to 15 feet, made only one of them.

It's maddening to hit so many good iron shots and good putts and not to make any of them.

A tour pro would have shot 65 with my tee to green yesterday- and that's the difference.

I don't have just one miss that is the problem. Left, right, typically, I usually have pretty good distance control. I do have a solid short game, and I am more than happy with it, I guess I just feel if I could hit 12-14 greens, yes I would have more putts, but I would have more birdie chances. I have a very quick swing (Nick Price like), I am starting to think this may lead me to an incomplete backswing with the irons. I have tried to slow down I just have a really hard time with it. Thanks for all your comments guys, I guess you always want the opposite of what you have. Next time I will be complaining because I hit 16 greens and had 33 putts. :tongue:

Same. Shot 79 with 3 greens, and 76 and 77 with 5 or 6 greens.

73 with 5 greens, your practically a god. Golf is about getting up and down, NO WAY I would even begin to be angry with that.

Golf is all about the short game. Thank the golfing Gods that you have a very good one. I have a very good short game as well, I drive the ball really well but my iron game sort of sucks comparatively. I guess they don't completely suck as I hit 13 greens today (71) but they could always get better.

Just my 2 cents but could be a tempo issue with the irons, I picked up a copy of Tour Tempo(book & cd) and my irons are flying very straight since I've changed my focus in my full iron play.

maybe it's a shaft issue on the irons... you say you have a very quick tempo...

If youre making solid contact with your irons and just missing greens, try to evaluate your strategy as you come into the greens.

 

are you shooting at too many pins?

 

sounds like it, or youre not picking spots that allow you effectively play to your "misses".

 

ive been working on the same things myself and got my gir stat up quite a bit this season (from around the same, 5/6 for 18 to over 65 percent now, on average).

 

Play conservative lines into the greens and wait for the right pins to come up in the round, that you can more effectively shoot for.

 

Also play most par 5s as 3 shoters, no matter how tempting they are to "go for it". Play to your "darts zone". ie: dont hit so much club on your second shot that you have delicate little chips/lobs into the greens. Play back to whatever your key wedge distance is so you can hit a fuller shot with enough spin to get birdie 60%-70% of the time. That will give you 4 GIRs right there (assuming you have 4 par 5s)

 

this will put more emphasis on your putting and you might even see your scores rise initially, but once you get your GIRs up to a higher level more consistently and get your lag putting really solid, you'll be able to start thinking about going low.

 

With these stats, you wont be able to do that and will be consistently putting too much pressure on your short game to keep you scoring well.

I am assuming that 73 is a bad score for you?

 

Or, you're frustrated because you feel that you should score lower?

 

Take this game in strides. I would be very slow in feeling frustrated with a 73, unless that is much higher than what you typically score.
