Ping Redwood "Star Shot" Finish

They call this the "star shot" finish and I think that all my qualms with the Redwood have been solved. DONE. Off to order it. This will probably go to what retail is so why not just get it from the factory?

Looks like Byron Morgan's Black Star finish that he's had for awhile. Star shot, that's funny.

That finish is a big improvement over the standard. Ping should have used this board for its focus group. :tongue:

Functionally, the Starshot is probably an improvement because of the reduced glare, but the Black Nickel Chrome is a beautiful finish and I get a ton of interest and compliments on my Piper. I'm torn between the good looks of the BNC and the functionality of the SS.

From the WRX department that does their tour stuff. Its sort of like the "animal style" hamburger at In & Out: it's not on the menu but anyone can order it. You have to know to ask for WRX finishes and stuff. SOME of what they do is found here: PING WRX

 

The retail has a sight line and no dot. This one was ordered w/o a sight line and with a dot instead. I think i'd take this finish, paint job with a sight line.

That finish solves any problem I ever had with the Redwood.

That looks awesome. I know Cabrera has a darker finish on his and DiMarco had more of a satin finish when he used one for a short time.

It is not a fake. I ordered it directly from Ping WRX. Thats why I put a picture of the build sheet in the auction.

No it's not fake. Other members here have ordered this finish as well. I think the upcharge was something like $35 but Ping Wrx will do it.

 

kenn810 - Is that your auction? If yes, could you tell me if the finish is a bead blasted stainless steel without any plating or is it some type of plating, like the Scotty Cameron charcol mist?

I just called Ping and they told me it is a natural bead blasted stainless steel finish - no plating - which is good because it means the putter will never chip or crack.

Does this mean they can go more than 2 degrees flat or upright? They stated on the black Nickel finish they could only go 2 degrees up or down because of the finish. I hope so because I could go for a gold dot zing.

Thanks for the input. I liked the black nickel finish but I like this new finish better (Beaded).

wow...i currently own a redwood anser and my only complaint is the shine. looks like i have a decision to make, order another redwood with the starshot or go with the circa to add to my collection.

 

this finish look amazing.

guys why not just take the putter and get it bead blasted (the top line it costs me about 10 bucks to do it with stainless scotties

Because the standard Ping Redwoods have a nickel plating. Unless you want the putter to look like crap, you would need to fully remove the nickel plating before bead blasting.

Folks, having salivated over this thing, i called my pro shop and they called ping here in Phx. It's an extra $20 they tell me and they can't just do it to an existing head. They have to order the heads that way. I am about to pull the trigger, but $270 is steep for a putter i've never played. I'm using a JAS anser right now and it's money. If it's even close to that, i'm sold and ordering one. But i need to demo one for a while first.

 

Oh the insanity of it all... Time to sell some more stuff. (time to do a FS post!)

I KNOW. Part of me wants to order 4 or 5 and flip them, making $150 on each. But the smart part of me says no.

 

Congrats to the guy who sold it (Ken810). He made BANK on that transaction.

 

For those who asked, the price from Ping is (assuming my pro shop is to believed) $249 + $20 for finish + tax. I have no idea if that's based on our Pro shop's connection to Ping (we're here in Phx) or just regular pricing.
