Saw a Ball Vanish

My son and I paired with two gentlemen for 9 this morning. Played the back and the most popular local track. On 17 one of the other guys hit his drive and the ball vanished. Where I was standing it looked like it vanished within the first foot. I thought maybe he had pounded it into the soft soil. Nope. Gone. We all just stood there and started asking if any of us saw it. We all saw it disappear. Now, my son did happen to have my phone in hand and did happen to catch it on video. In the video you can see the ball start to launch, reach a height of about 5 feet, disappear behind the golfer's head and not reappear. Strangest thing I have ever seen playing golf. Until today, the strangest was seeing sparks when hitting our drives on a round many years ago. If I can clip the video down I'll share it. It did dawn on me that these guys were pulling some gag...but sure didn't seem like it.

I was standing behind this guy but facing his front. I lost sight of the ball after about a foot. But, you can see it in this video a few feet further. Certainly, it appears to be a bad shank or something. But, even here it seems to vanish. Pretty funny...

Lucky that my boy likes to snag my phone and use up all the memory on our outings.

 

As I said, the video shows where the ball was a few feet further than where my eyes lost it. Actually, all of us lost it...which was a first. We're all standing right there and "poof", gone. What I clipped from the end of the clip is me walking up and scouring the tee box to see where the ball was embedded flush in the soft soil, and not finding it. My boy continued to film to get my drive. But, I figured you guys didn't want to see that mess (actually it was ok...)

 

The other event I mentioned was years ago when my foursome at a course in the mountains all got to enjoy seeing sparks when we were hitting our drives. That was strange and we all were laughing about it. But, what we were ignoring was the lightening storm blowing in. I almost got struck on the middle of the 18th fairway with my 7iron in hand. Apparently, the air was charged quite a bit. Our caps probably prevented our hair from standing up, which would have been a good indicator of impending doom...

Sparks when hitting driver pretty common here when hitting balls around dusk looks like twinkling lights. Disappearing balls? Seen one nosedive into damp turf and disappear but not thin air.
