First Timer To Vegas

Skhacker

Recommended Posts

Wife and I just booked our first trip to the strip (Feb. 22-25th) and looking for suggestions for first timers, must see people/places, great restaurants (especially burger joints ). It's just the 2 of us so we're pretty much open to anything. We're staying at the Cosmopolitan. Being Canadian I've already got tickets for the Golden Knights vs Canucks lol.

And of course, any golf related stuff close to the strip?

Cosmopolitan is the "hip" place right now. Nice choice

I'm by no means a Vegas expert, i go every year but am usually working most of the time. There's golf near the strip, there's a "top golf" that my boss went to last year. I actually played that same day at a place called "rhodes ranch" but there's a few more options. You can ask the concierge at your place they'll have a few suggestions. There's 3-4 courses within a short cab ride.

General tips about Vegas:

-Be prepared to walk more than you think. The strip is not as easy to walk as you might hear. Even hotels right next to each other might take 15 minutes to walk to. The strip is absolutely gigantic and like 8 lanes wide, and the hotel lots are even more gigantic. It's also really hot because the concrete is like a furnace, and it's crowded. Don't hesitate to take a lot of cabs

-Food is really expensive. Even a turkey sandwich in the hotel gift shot is going to run you like 15 bucks, so also be ready for that

-Shopping is really expensive. Don't let your wife anywhere near the Ceasar's palace malls if you want to be able to pay your mortgage LOL

There's 1000 restaurants to choose from so hard to narrow down. One thing i will say is that the Mirage has a nice steakhouse called "heritage steakhouse" that was surprisingly reasonable both for wine and steaks. If i recall i got a steak there for under 50$ which is like finding the white whale....and they had decent wines for like 60-70

I went to a steakhouse at the Cosmo and it was a lot more expensive

MTL is correct. My wife and I go 1-2 times a year to unwind. On the strip check out a cirque do soleil show, the fountain at bellagio, Caesars had the original inside mall and it’s pretty neat with the statues.

Day drinking is most affordable buying beers in the ABC stores on the strip. Bali Hai is on the strip for golf, there’s a small callaway deal and the top golf.

I definitely recommend trying Fremont. We no longer stay on the strip. Too big, too expensive, too... everything. On Fremont you get single deck, lower buy ins, closer casinos, more local “flavor”, and much more laid back. At least in our opinion.

Fremont also has free music on the street. Usually 80s bands but still fun. Over the years we have seen night ranger, lover boy (good Canadian band for you, I think), and survivor.

It's not hot during February. It can be a bit chilly at night if it's windy with temperatures bottoming out at 4 degrees C, but it's probably light jacket weather for you being a Canadian. I actually played with a couple guys from England who actually quit on the 15th hole at a local course because they were so cold during the wintertime.

Maybe try Lyft instead of a cab, especially when you are coming from the airport. (I don't know how Uber is doing since their hack) If you're staying at the Cosmo and a cab is taking you through the airport tunnel, you are being long hauled. On the news a few years back, a company called Desert Cab frequently did this, and it's illegal. They still might try to get away with it. You can report them to the Taxi Authority if this occurs. Or, if you want to sound extra sharp, you can request the cabbie to take you to the Cosmopolitan via Tropicana and Las Vegas Blvd (edit: Swenson and Harmon). They will probably think twice about long hauling you if you say that.

Nearby your hotel there is a huge golf store you can check out called Las Vegas Golf and Tennis. Not much golf near the strip, the Wynn GC is closing, Desert Pines is north of downtown in a bad neighborhood, and Bali Hai on the south side of the strip which is pricey and airplanes pass by every few minutes. You can hit up the driving range at the Las Vegas Golf Center (used to be named Callaway Golf Center, and later on the Taylormade Golf Center) They also have a 9 hole par 3 course that is also lit up at night.

Also try an In-N-Out burger. I like mine with grilled onions and you have to specifically request it, or else you'll get raw onions. Grilled makes it sweeter and 10 times better imo.

For touristy stuff, you can watch the fountain show at the Bellagio, that one is pretty cool and it's free.

Yeah i should say that i go every year in April. So i can't comment too much on the weather in February.

In April there are usually a couple of days that i am there where it's uncomfortable on the strip

Thanks for all the great info so far. Not expecting heat, but it will be a nice break from -25°C. Wife just found out Elton John is playing at Caesars the first night we're there so taking that in as per her request. Appreciate the info on cabs and stuff too. Always feel like I'm getting scammed a bit being a first timer somewhere.

Neon Museum.

Pinball hall of fame.

The Belagio fountain looks great from the top of the tower at the Paris.

See a show. Broadway, concert, magic, comedy, there's lots of options.

Drinking and eating off the Strip is MUCH cheaper. Unless you're drinking for free while playing in the casinos. (If you want nice liquor, order it by name. Vegas pays around $10 a bottle for top shelf stuff. If you're playing it will only cost you a tip for the server. Throw them more than a buck and they might just remember you.)

There is no sex in the champagne room.

If you're up for some nice outdoor stuff, Zion and Valley of Fire are both worth the drive.

Sure, my pleasure and I hope you enjoy your trip. Of course, the cab stuff only applies if you are flying in, which I forgot to ask if you were doing so. I have seen a few license plates from your province around town here so they must have driven.

Don't be afraid to take cabs around, but imo as a first timer, you should be on foot on the strip. lots to see and stuff is easily missed if they take you on the roads behind the strip.

Golf wise, not much on the strip. As mentioned - Top Golf is there (behind MGM) Bali Hai. I played a muni a while back that was maybe 5 min from the strip on the free way.

Are you planning a round? I know there are a lot of vegas trip posts in the regional section (I might've started one or two of them)

Food wise, lots of really good options. It'll depend on how much you want to spend. In n out, as mentioned, I really enjoy - my fav fast food burger places.

Airport - we always take a town car as you can make a trip to your choice of supermarket/liquor store off strip at arrival and not worry about finding a second ride to the hotel. it'll cost a bit more but my wife and I prefer the comfort of a town car.

Don't forget about the $20 sandwich at check-in. YMMV on the success as it depends on hotel and clerk.

I usually try to hit Lotus of Siam if I have time. It's an awesome thai restaurant off the strip in a run-down shopping center. The food is super cheap and alot of famous people eat there due to it's great reputation and the fact that they usually don't get bothered by tourists there.

Good suggestion, but the roof collapsed at that location in September, so they moved it to a new location near the University.

Edit: Apparently they want to reopen the old one after they fix the building, the paper said they might finish in February. So two Lotus of Siams three miles apart!

Yes we're flying in. The cab info is good to know because we'll be cabbing a lot.

Will definitely put on a lot of miles walking the strip as that's the experience we're going for.

BTW, my avatar pic is from the 17th hole at Reflection Bay, which is a Jack Nicklaus course on Lake Las Vegas. My buddy who lives out there knows a guy, so we can always play it for $40. It's pretty forgiving off the tee, has nice views and the greens are always perfect.

OH! don't forget the outlet malls. I don't normally hit them but I hear there's 2 near by. My wife says one is better than the other. Apparently one has higher end stores.

I agree. I enjoy Freemont much more than “new” Vegas. You get more bang for your buck.

Personally, I don’t need the palatial hotel room. I just need a decent hotel bar, a clean room to sleep in, and a nearby uber/lyft stand (I’ve found lyft to be much more reliable and affordable than uber when staying in Vegas). Then I can save my money to go to the golf course or visit other restaurants.

For me, I hate shopping, so new Vegas wasn’t targeted to me. At first glance, it is awesome. But then, it just becomes like a gigantic mall.

Good luck!

True about Desert Pines. However, I played it and it was in great shape and a lot of fun to play.

We went out for burgers at a local place and it was one of the best meals I had there. Granted, I was hanging with a local fireman and he knew all the great places to hit up.

I lived there for over a decade starting in 1997.

Musts

1.any Cirque du Soleil show except Zumanity I recommend "O". (expensive tickets, but worth it)

2.fountains at Bellagio (free)

3.Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens (free)

4. Walking around downtown Freemont Street (free)

5. Hard Rock Casino- Just check it out (free)

6.Any large Casino's Sportsbook it will be amazing to see the large digital betting lines boards

MtlJeff 's post is spot on and contains very good advice.

Now Golf

as others have stated golf is very limited if you want it to be close to the strip.

Don't bother to play Bali Hai it's a rip and the air traffic is so enoying

My favorite courses (would all require transportation from the Cosmo) were

Primm Valley Lakes course

Paiute golf resort

Revere at Anthem

Wolf Creek in Mesquite

and Huskydawg is so correct. If you have not ever eaten at In-and -Out burger DO IT! Mandatory

Las Vegas is like no place on earth. You will be blown away at the size of the casino's on the strip.

I had a wonderful time living there, but glad I moved onward out of Nevada eventually.

Do have fun sir. Drink, Dance, Dine, Shop, Bang Balls, but gamble very little (unless you are wealthy lol)

I thought Bali Hai was a total dud too. But it was close. We used to visit an old friend who lived there and his LV experience was completely different than our “3 days of stupid tour.” When we went with them, we rarely saw anyone you would expect.

Yes, Reflection Bay is awesome! I wish I could play it for $40, usually I'd have to pay $65 or more. Disappointed that they took out the driving range for what else, more houses. They installed a hitting net for warm ups instead, but you don't see where the ball is flying.

And yes there are 2 outlet malls, one to the north and one to the south. The one to the south is close by to the Las Vegas Golf Center range and par-3 course. One other close by golf option I forgot was Las Vegas National Golf Course. It had quite a history when it was called the Sahara Country Club where the Rat Pack played and hosted several PGA Tour events from the 60s to the 90s.

I played Las Vegas National many dozen times. I do like the layout quite a bit. It is very close to the Strip too so you could definitely consider a round there Skhacker.

When I first moved there I attended my first

Las Vegas Invitational (that's what they called the Vegas TOUR stop then) on that course and watched Freddie's smooth swing live which was too awesome. Love me some Freddie C. I too watched Tiger live for the first time and that was just incredible. Also don't forget that parts of the movie Casino (1995) were filmed on that course. The home on the left of the 18th fairway was used (in this following clip), and they landed a dang plane on the fairway of hole #1. Too cool. I always told tourists that I was paired up with this exact fun fact. See it here.

I just got back from Vegas. 3rd trip this year. About 35th in the last 15 years. It's a lot of fun.

Fremont St. is best on a Friday or Saturday night. That's when the freaks come out. Stay in the touristy areas down there on Fremont St. Lots of cool bars and restaurants down there.

Cosmo is a great hotel/casino. There is a secret pizza place there. See if you can find it (no cheating). It's decent pizza if you need a slice.

We only use Uber. No more cabs for us.

If you want to head off strip for a meal, go to Casa Di Amore. Take an uber or call them for their limo if they still have it. Even after the cost of Uber, you'll still be way ahead from Cosmo restaurant prices. Go after 6 so you can hear the band and singer. Nice people there. And check out their jungle room outside.

Definitely visit Venetian the indoor canal and St. Mark's Square.

Desert Pines is a good course close to the Strip. The neighborhood isn't as bad as advertised. It was a lot nicer than what I was expecting.

You'll see Canuck shirts so wear yours!

I love Las Vegas. Sounds crazy but we like to go to just detox and relax. It's nice to not have any responsibility and just do whatever, whenever we want. We usually go 7-10 times a year, being in SoCal it's only a 3 1/2 hour drive. Swimming, hiking, eating, people-watching and of course my wife loves to shop.

Cosmo is a nice hotel. If you don't have a fountain-view room already of the Bellagio fountains, ask about it when you check in. You'll most likely get an upgrade because you're going during the week. You'll be directly in front of it if you get a room in the East Tower. Rooms in the West Tower also have fountain view rooms but they are set back a ways and at a slight angle. But a decent view nonetheless. As MtlJeff said, everything on the strip is expensive. Morning cup of coffee is 5-8 bucks, bagel is 6 bucks, etc. I got breakfast at eggslut in Cosmo for me and my wife and it cost $28 bucks for 2 coffees and 2 slutty egg breakfast sandwiches. Ridiculous anywhere else but here. If you're looking for burgers, Holstein's right in Cosmo has great burgers and milkshakes. In' n Out is a SoCal staple item, but many first timers think they're lame so it's hit/miss. There's a Shake Shack right by New York New York as well. Gordon Ramsey's has a place in Caesar's with decent burgers. Bobby Flay has a burger joint right in front of Aria/Mandarin Oriental.

There are two main outlet malls there. One is on the south end of the strip, it's decent but the better one is on the north end of the strip off of Charleston Ave. Those outlets have all the name brands there for you and your wife. I usually hit up Nike, Adidas, Puma, Hurley and Lululemon for my golf attire. Ralph Lauren as well. The shops at Caesar's is more for your wife, there's nothing in there that's a must see for you other than you just HAVE to go there because it's The Shops at Caesar's. Same with the Canal Shops in the Venetian. There's a Las Vegas Golf and Tennis off of Dean Martin BLVD. I went in there and wasn't all that impressed. Never went back. There are 2 Golf Galaxy's, one towards Summerlin(west) and one in Henderson(east). They're normal golf stores. Nothing to shout about. Others have covered actual golf already so I won't comment.

Glad you're seeing Elton John. I wasn't expecting much but we really really enjoyed it. Think you will too. Maybe see one more show? Cirque shows are really good. My 2 fave are "O" at the Bellagio and Le Reve(not technically a Cirque show) at the Wynn. You can find cheap(er) tickets to these shows at 1/2 Price Ticket counters(Tix4tonight) sprinkled throughout the strip. They open at 10 am and if you're there right when they open, the day of wanting to see the show, you stand a good chance of getting them. If not those two, then Ka at MGM or Mystere at Treasure Island are good as well. If you wanna getaway from the strip and have a car, you can visit Valley of Fire and do some easy hiking. So beautiful there. One hour drive north on the 15 FWY. Can also go 2 hours east and hit up the west rim of the Grand Canyon. They have a glass extension over the canyon you walk out on. It's pretty trippy but you get nickel and dimed just to get over there, parking, shuttle etc. so annoying.

If you hit up a buffet, Bacchanal Buffet in Caesar's is exceptional. So is The Buffet at Wynn. Cosmo's Buffet Wicked Spoon is good but not quite as nice as the other two IMO. Don't go for dinner though. Go inbetween 1-3 pm and you'll pay lunch prices instead of dinner prices and it's still the same food. You'll easily save 15-20 dollars.

MtlJeff hit it right on when he said be prepared to walk. Exploring the strip is fun but it's a lot of walking to and inside the casinos. I know you'll have fun, I do think you'd have more fun if you visited when it's a bit warmer and the pools are all open. In Feb they're all closed and it'll be cold walking around outside. At least it is for me cuz I'm a wuss when it comes to being cold.

I'll just say this in closing. I was on the strip and at the Cosmopolitan when the shootings by Steven Paddock took place that crazy night. I wasn't at the concert when it happened but every hotel went on lockdown and it was so bleepin' crazy. Nobody knew what was really going on at that time. Just confusion and mass chaos. Looking back on that night it really spooked me about future visits to LV. When you are walking on the strip, there are many places where there are guard rails so cars cannot jump onto the sidewalk. But there are lots of places where there are NO guard rails at all, and large amounts of people are exposed to being run over by some psychopath if or when they decide to do something crazy. You can't prevent everything bad happening, but I'm just saying be mindful, be smart, and don't underestimate the power of stupid people, esp when they're drunk which you will see a lot of when you're on the strip.

I'll also say this. Local losers prey on tourists on the strip. One look and they know who's a out-of-town sucker. Don't entertain anyone who comes up and wants to talk to you about buying things, or donating things etc. Just keep walking and ignore them. Same thing at shopping areas if you get asked to try certain products, or test your intelligence etc. just keep moving.

Sorry for the long post.

You are correct about people preying on others. They aren't quite as brazen as Europe where they work in teams and police don't care. However, if you leave your wallet on a counter or something, they will take it. A family friend cashed out a slot ticket and put it in his breast pocket and someone distracted him by talking to him at the machine. He later found it was missing.

If you are at a slot machine and someone appears to be a little TOO friendly and talkative, give them the thumb and tell them to get out of there. If you are winning, they might even attempt to put money into your machine just to 'test it out' and if it hits, there will be a huge argument over the winnings. Or you can be like me and restrict gambling to betting on sports events. It's a little scary how accurate they can be when it comes to point spreads (one team winning over another by a certain amount of points) and over/under totals (where you bet on if the two teams' combined score is over or under a specified amount). I hate slots and video poker, but I don't mind laying $10-20 on a sporting event.

Decided to come back to Vegas and hang out for awhile. We booked a room at Cosmo and we are enjoying our stay this Christmas. Noticed a massive improvement along the strip in terms of safety. There are 4 feet high cement pillars every 5 feet where there used to be nothing preventing a person from driving a car up on the sidewalks and causing many casualties. So glad they've addressed this issue. Went to the Wicked Spoon Buffet tonight. Waited an hour from 4-5pm but after we ate and walked out, the line was super long. Those people were looking at a 2-3 hour wait time, super crowded being the holidays.

Tomorrow I'll go check out the Wynn hotel and am curious about the pro shop there for the golf course. I'm wondering if they're going to put everything on sale or if they're even open at all, with the news that the golf course is officially closed. View from the room!

    • Titleist GT drivers - 2024 the Memorial Tournament
Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
