2018 GAP and PA Golf Association Schedules Released

It's that special time of year where we get an early Christmas present from the Golf Association of Philadelphia in the form of the 2018 Tournament Schedule buried in the back of the GAP magazine winter issue. The PA Golf Association Schedule has been out for a little while but I thought it better to condense the two into one post.

 

The GAP schedule over the past couple of years left them with tough acts to follow with their signature event being held at Merion in 2016 and the renovated Philadelphia Cricket Club in 2017. Propped up by major venues like Huntingdon Valley and Wilmington Country club for the Patterson Cup, Waynesborough/Overbrook for the Mid Am and The Ridge at Back Brook /Philadelphia Country Club for the Open, Aronimink serving as a US Amateur qualifying site, and 2018 basically had no where to go but flat or down. With that preface, the 2018 schedule is still very strong.

 

Middle Amateur Championship - Llanerch Country Club - I'm actually quite pleased to see this course on the schedule as I think it's one of the least talked about, really good courses in Philadelphia. Every time I have played it the greens have been excellent and it's got a wonderful set of par 3's, a good mix of long difficult par 4's, short risk reward par 4's, and par 5's that are reachable but only with 2 really solid shots.

 

Amateur Championship - Whitemarsh Valley/Green Valley Country Club (qualifying) - While I don't know anything about Green Valley, I think Whitemarsh is a very solid course. Certainly not on the level of a Merion or Cricket but still a good track with plenty of challenging holes. Plays a lot longer than the yardage would indicate and the lone time I played it the greens were absolutely phenomenal.

 

Open Championship - St. David's - I will say it has been 3 years since I've played St. Davids and I recently played with the Donald Ross specialist charged with re-designing/restoring the course and have been assured that it's been improved with significant tree removal and some design changes. However last I played there it was in miserable condition and I was not a fan of the layout.

 

Patterson Cup - Gulph Mills Golf Club - Easily the best of the bunch and an absolute stunner of a Donald Ross design. Despite being an 8 iron away from 76 it's like stepping into another world. Beautifully conditioned and on the shorter side but still a wonderful challenge. The 4th hole is one of the best short par 3's you'll find anywhere in the section and the course is simply loaded with character. This is a can't miss if you haven't played it and have the game to qualify.

 

Venues worth noting for other events on the schedule:

US Open Local Qualifier - Hidden Creek

US Amateur Qualifier - Biderman/TBD (36 holes in 1 day) Assuming the TBD will turn into Wilmington CC/Fieldstone or Kennett Square G&CC

US Mid Am Qualifier - Cedarbrook

 

 

The PA Golf Association has put together a solid schedule for 2018, quickly, the highlights are:

 

Senior Match Play - Ledge Rock

PA Four-Ball - Omni Bedford Springs

Senior Am - Philadelphia Cricket Club Militia Hill (even though it's not Wissahickon, still a good course)

Amateur Championship - Sunnehanna Country Club

PA Open - Lancaster Country Club - maybe the best course on either of the two schedules. Absolutely fantastic start to finish.

PA Mid-Am - Saucon Valley Weyhill Course

I saw that. Aronimink is as good as it gets. Probably worth playing in a few PA events this year to secure the exemption on that one for next year.

PA Open at Lancaster will be sweet. Third best course in PA IMHO, would get the respect it deserves if it were closer to Philly or Pittsburgh.

Wonder why they took down the schedule for AA,A and B. Here is a little hack. Go into score sheets and look at the 2018 score sheets for any team you are interested in. It will give you a message about the captains not entering lineups yet, but it also gives away what the match would be. It's not 100% because there could be changes prior to the schedule being officially released but it gives you an idea of which teams may be in your section.

Schedule is up! Nothing like the GAP matches. A great tradition. My son is supposed to play this year as well. Hopefully it works out and there isn't a last minute objection to a 14 year old playing on the team.

It's a club decision, GAP rules do not have an age limitation.

However, a junior or college player should consult his team coach before competing. Competing in the BMW GAP Team Matches could prohibit him from any school athletic activity.

I know that. I am referring to objections from male members of the club. And despite the fact that our pro fully believes that we should put the best players possible in the lineup, sometimes egos get in the way and that isn't what happens.

Yup - great course, a bit of a hidden gem... anytime you and your son want to get out, we have a great group of guys there and we'd be happy to get some new faces out there.

That's the one I'm signed up for. Had a down year last year and lost all my exemptions, glad they have the Saturday qualifiers this year though!
