Grow the Game vs Fan yelling

I'd rather grow the game with people who respect and uphold the traditions of the game. Fans yelling and cheering are great for the sport, but not the obnoxious ones who have been born out of the Wasted Management Open--sure, have that one event out of the year, but leave that type of overly intoxicated fan out of the rest of the year's tourneys.

There's nothing worse than getting paired up with new fans of the sport and being asked: "Hey, you mind if I play some music?"

what about someone who's played golf for 40 years and wants to play music? can we just stop pretending those who enjoy some music while playing golf is limited to newbies or those under 30yr

Music is against the rules (and annoying) regardless of how long a person has been playing.

question for those who attended a PGA tournament

have you ever stud on a tee, the player that you are watching is hitting is driver on a par 5, and the person next to you is yelling "get in the hole" or "mashed potatoes" on the top of his lungs. have you turned to that person and asked him/her, what a idiotic thing to do that was?

No. Because they probably know it's idiotic and that's why they do it. Stupid people know and are proud of their stupidity. And I don't want to get in a fight at the golf course.

At football games, do people sit there quietly , and just clap quietly when there team scores a touchdown?

Of course not. why should golf be different?

Because it's not football.

Once again people confuse correlation with causation. There is a correlation between people eating ice cream and drowning, but the likelihood that vanilla goodness is what killed them is unlikely. Just like this comparison... The likely causation is liquid courage, a bit of narcissism, and the lack of any real punishment.

There is neither correlation nor causation. I never yell at a golf tournament even when drinking beer.

Maybe it's just time for the PGA Tour, making billions of dollars, to actually stop relying on volunteers, spend some actual money on course wide security, and start enforcing some real punishment for the frat boy behavior. The only way they are ever going to curb the really abusive fans is an immediate escort out.

Please tone down your advertisement. Thanks.

Why do these "grow the game" discussions get foisted upon us? We (those of us who do not work in a golf industry at least) are essentially just consumers in this market. Maximizing our own utility is all we're really after just like in every other market where we spend our money.

When we go into Best Buy to buy something, we are looking to get a good product at a good deal. I have effectively no interest in how Best Buy is doing as a business, or what I can do to grow the electronics market. To their credit, the electronics industry does not hold it against me for seeking to maximize my own utility not does it attempt to guilt-trip me with concerns about its bottom lines and whatever.

The golf industry on the other hand is constantly pestering its end users and trying to burden them with the onus of expanding the market.

I agree. If growing the game requires significant changes, I'm not interested. I like and enjoy the game as it is today. If fifty years from now there is no golf at all, sobeit.

totally agree...They can listen to Free Bird on their own time.... just weird to hear Lil Kim blaring on the tee box when im trying to decide on what line to take ( true story)....

Seriously, every time I hear someone playing music on the golf course it's always something along the lines of Taylor Swift and/or EDM.

  1. Don't want to grow the game: I like available, early morning tee times. We can grow the game if the newbies play in the afternoon on the goat ranches :pimp: .
  2. Torn on yelling...I hate "bababooey", "mashed potatoes", and "get in the hole" guy, but don't mind a little bit of (mostly) good-natured fan involvement. If a guy is a jerk to fans, he should reap what he sows.

There is an occasion for yelling after a swing to be funny.

Like the guy who yelled,

Hold the Door!

game-of-thrones.6.5.3313000.52.gif

But, be creative and selective. The mindless booey and mashed potato is quite boring.

It's like this kid I grew up with. We would be at the movies and if the actress was about to cry, he would make this fake crying sound, not too loud, but the people sitting around us would start cracking up.

For those whos argument though, is that others are putting on the course and so people should respect that and not yell bababoooy or whatever from a nearby location, then I guess crowds should also not cheer at the top of their lungs after a putt is holed for birdie? It might disturb someone teeing off on another hole? That is part of the game is it not? Tuning out that stuff?

Do you even play golf? They shouldn’t have to worry about some troglodyte screaming in their backswing no matter where they are on the course. I really hope more players follow Justin Thomas’ example and have these imbeciles tossed. I go to Colonial every year and I’ve never heard a Bababooier. But if I ever do I’ll damn sure say something and do everything I can to have them removed.

Thats your reply to what I said? Some on here stated that its disrespectful to even yell anything after a tee shot as it could interfere with a tee shot or a putt or whatever nearby. I am just pointing out a flaw in that logic. Crowds cheer WAY louder, that should stop too then?

Oh and no I don't play golf, I just obsess on here about this sport because I picked it at random while I was bored one day.

Swing hard in case you hit it!

Flawed question. I don't believe in the direct correlation between growing the game and fan yelling. That's ridiculous.

There are 10 factors related to growing the game that have 0 to do with fan yelling.

Things like making the game cheaper, faster, and easier for the newcomer. Those things have nothing to do with a few attention seekers who yell at pro tournaments.

Relax good sir, these are the last things a traditionalist/elitist would like to hear.

There is no flaw in the logic. Spontaneous applause for a great shot or putt IS part of the game. Drunk dickheads yelling because their mama didn’t give them enough attention is quite another. If you can’t see the difference I seriously question your intelligence.

Yes, there is a flaw in that logic. I don't need explain it again. Also, I am all for people being open and honest, brutally honest in fact, but I don't take kindly to direct insults that have no justification. I kindly request that you don't do it again. Its really not wise, and it doesn't do you any good to make enemies over a sport we both enjoy.

I will give you a chance to man up and apologize, or if that is too difficult, to just avoid doing it again.

I've been golfing for 14 years. I've been to one PGA event, and that's only because they stopped in Tacoma one year. Growing the game <> PGA events. Going to that event has had zero impacts on my golf purchases and rounds played.

I'm just an average dad. You want me to spend more money on golf? Make it easier to get quick rounds in or more easy to get to ranges or bays.

I do not want to grow the game and I have no time for those that look at this game as entertainment.

However I do want accessibility and opportunity for everyone that could, would or already has fallen madly in love with this great game.

At a glance, it might look as if both those views contradict each other, but I don't believe they do.

I do not want to grow the game and I have no time for those that look at this game as entertainment.

Why is that a bad thing? Not everybody who likes the sport has the ability to buy clubs, join a club, etc.

Just my opinion but I consider golf a sport and IMO sport is not entertainment. I'm not a baseball player but I watch and love the sport. However I don't watch it to be entertained, I watch it because it's so much more than that. Competitive, skillful, strategic combined with determination, passion and the willingness to be prepared to put it all together on game day. I could go on and on about all the aspects that makes sport great because there's so much above and below the surface. It can inspire and even teach you how to live, and it has the ability reveal what your made of.

Entertainment is nothing without an audience however sport is nothing less without one.

I have serious issues with people going to any sporting event expecting to be entertained. If anyone thinks the players are doing what they're doing to entertain you, then your sadly mistaken and you don't understand the essence of sport.

Again, just my personal thoughts.

I feel quite the opposite. All sporting events are entertainment. The players are doing what they are doing because they make money. We watch to be entertained and we pay them huge sums of money because we are entertained.

I personally couldn't care less if the Tour evaporated tomorrow. So it doesn't really bother me.

Has anyone ever considered that some of these people yelling this stuff and some of the less than desirable golfers you see on local courses do these things to spite the traditions and etiquette that golf demands? I'm sure a number of them do it just to ruffle feathers of the stuffy old golf guys. In their mind they're sticking it to the "man"

This could very well be part of it. I don't partake in that kind of stuff that ruffles feathers (although I really really want to at times) but I have a real big issue with the stuffy old guy types, as well as the golf elitist types and the golfers that have no patience for teaching or playing behind beginner golfers. They give the sport a bad name and scare away the future imo.
