So I found an easy way to cut these in half. Since I have a lot of used balls or just about every brand , here is a starter sample. Will update more , maybe 1 or 2 a week.

So here is the Chrome Soft Truvis - even though it’s a 4 pc ball (2016 version) it’s very hard to see the separation of the inner 2 layers. It cut very clean and smooth being a softer ball. The cover is medium on thickness.

Here is the Vice Pro Lime - 3 pc ball. Average thickness cover and a pretty firm cover. Did not cut as smoothly or evenly as the 2016CS (firmer core)

Lastly for today - the 2017 Srixon XV. Very firm high compression core. Cover seems extremely thick, however being a 4pc construction I think part of that cover most be the 2nd layer. The inner 2 layers appear to be well centered.

Honestly I am not an instagrammer so not sure. I was just bored and know with so much talk about layers , consistency and quality why not cut them open?

Trackcoach got it right. I had some sprinkler repairs to do last week and the PVC cutter works very well.

So decided to do 2 more today - TP5 and the Maxfli U/6 Tour. The TP5 is really like artwork inside. Seems to have very tight tolerances on the layers. The U/6 looks a little “ehh” but the ball still performed very well for the price.

Dug through my box of cut up balls and found a u/6 tour to show it is in fact 6 piece.

Weird how much more defined your photo is. It appears some layers on certain balls can blend a little. Not sure how the layering process works but I guess it’s possible if heat it involved it could cause this effect?

So here we have a 2018 Z-Star Kelly Green edition. Very hard to tell where the 3rd layer is just beneath the cover. After I use a white or yellow 2017 Z-Star I will upload to compare. Weird almost looks like a 2pc with a urethane cover.

Not 100% sure but I think Srixon put a white or clear urethane on top of the inner white mantle so it looks like 1 layer but is in fact two. I think their urethane cover is very thin.

that may help explain their phenomenal durability. 2nd layer being sale color would help hide scuffs better. Soon I will cut a yellow Z and see.

The Z Stars and QST are hard to see the layers unless under a colored light. The layers are more pronounced under my Phillips Hue lighting

What do manufacturers call it when they sprinkle little bits of colored material into the core of the ball?

It’s almost like they sweep up the factory floor and throw the scraps from premium balls in there.

 

I don’t see how this could help the performance? In metal forging , adding random materials would make the metal weaker.
