Simple question.

Sorry to answer with a question but why are there four men's majors? Why is the World Series (of baseball) a best of seven contest?

These are rhetorical questions by the way. To make the point that all these numbers are arbitrary.

A simple answer is that for a while the LPGA tried to mimic the four men's majors but then at some point the management decided to break out on their own. And why the heck not.

In my opinion none of this is a big deal. A person either enjoys watching women's golf or they don't. Four, five majors... doesn't make a damn difference in the overall viewership. In fifty, a hundred years there will probably be five men's majors as well if you ask me.

Why do you drive on a parkway and park on a driveway?

Why are they called apartments when they are together?

What happens if you drive at the speed of light and turn your head lights on?

What do you think about when you are not thinking?

There are far more entertaining questions in the universe........ close this thread.

The majors do recognize the talent overseas. Numerous JLPGA and KLPGA players are entered into the majors each year based on world rankings. Ji Hyun Kim, Ai Suzuki, Hye Jin Choi, and Jeong Eun Lee 6 each played in the ANA and USWO this season. In previous years Jiyai Shin, So Seon Ryu, Sung Hyun Park, In Gee Chun, Jin Young Ko, Hye Jin Choi, Ha Neul Kim, Bo Mee Lee, Ji Hyun Oh, Jin Young Ko, and others have played in some of the majors.

Generally speaking, one can only climb so high in the World rankings playing on the KLPGA and JLPGA.

The actual answer is that Evian wanted more for its money and part of that was trying to encourage a better field by throwing the major designation on it.

I realize that the LPGA and LET sanctioned majors do recognize talent overseas. But (this is just my opinion) I think both the JLPGA and KLPGA are deeper talent wise than the top 5 or top 3 money list and top 50 in rolex ranking qualifier spots they are typically given. There isn't particularly anything wrong with how the LPGA/LET fill the fields for their co-sanctioned majors. In addition both JLPGA and KLPGA each have their own majors. And the JLPGA has invited KLPGA and LPGA players to participate in majors. But the strength and popularity of womens golf in that region leads me to believe that the region should have a major championship that is recognized by all of womens golf. It's probably something the JLPGA and KLPGA need to take the lead on (if the will and interest in there) to make happen. Based on the strength of both tours, I think they would be able to find the sponsorship to make it one of the largest prizes in womens golf.

I have to disagree. The best KLPGA and JLPGA players play in the 5 majors, and rarely make a splash. Yes, a handful have done well, e.g. So Yeon, In Gee, Sung Hyun, Jeong Eun, Jin Young, but for the most part they struggle to make the cut.

If you look at the results of the past 7 majors, only 18 have made the cut. Top 10's can be counted on one hand.

That said, I sure wouldn't mind seeing a major played in Asia.

Yes.

IMO...although it would never happen in my life time....these should be the 4 women's major's in women's golf.

USWO and KPMG.

The ANA, WBO and Evian eliminated....the galleries at all 3 are abysmal....how can it feel like a major when they are playing in front a small group of spectators, just like a typical LPGA event.

And the Mission Hills and the Evian resort courses are meh at best.

Based on the interest/popularity of women's golf in Asia....Korea and Japan should obtain a major each...if one goes onto youtube....the galleries at any JLPGA blows away a regular stop on the LPGA tour.

Obviously I'm biased, I'd like to see the CWO regain it's major status back....but not as a 5th major.....and only if Golf Canada was able to negotiate some of the best privates in Canada into the rotation.

The CWO is generally well attended.

The only women's major that had any resemblance to a major was the USWO in 2015 in Lancaster....the galleries were HUGE.

I'd say that Korea and Japan having a major in alternate years would be worth pursuing.

Europe should have a major. I love the Evian course and its surrounding scenery, weather notwithstanding. The rescheduling in 2019 should help.

The fact that there are four men's majors traces back to Bobby Jones' tremendous year of 1930. He won, in order, the US Men's Amateur, the British Men's Amateur, the Open Championship, and the US Open. His writer/friend O B Keeler called it the Impregnable Quadrilateral. In 1960, after Arnold Palmer had won the Masters and the US Open, his friend/writer suggested that he play in the Open Championship. He figured that if Arnold could win the Open championship and the PGA, Arnold would then have a season equal to Bobby Jones in 1930. Drum named winning all four majors in one year as the Grand Slam. And that is how the four majors for men came to being.

Why should the women have 5? Who knows. But in my opinion, the course that holds the Evian is not major worthy.

Unseen, in the background, Fate was quietly slipping the lead into the boxing-glove.  P.G. Wodehouse
