Los Angeles Advice

Recommended Posts

I recently relocated to Los Angeles ( North Hollywood specifically) and am looking for advice on where to play. Not interested in private course (unless someone here wants to invite me out) but it seems there are a fare amount of public courses around the area. Any tips on which ones are worth it or should be avoided and ease of getting onto the course on weekends as a single will be greatly appreciated.

Rustic Canyon was one I had some interest in already. So good to get a vote of confidence there.

Rustic Canyon (in Moorpark). Walkable, firm & fast, not super expensive, & interesting.

Anyone have experience with the Woodley Lakes / Balboa / Encino Municipal Courses? I heard from one person to go for the Woodley Lakes course out of those.

Rancho Park is just a great design in the heart of the city conditions are just o k....pace is hit or miss but worth it everytime. Wilson is the same thing right next to you very cool design with some decent little elevation changes for right in the city....Harding is fun as well thats a 36 hole complex at Griffith Park.

Willing to drive go hit Olivas Links in Ventura firm and fast and affordable. Rustic is the best in the whole area pretty much hands down. Moorpark CC and Tierra Rejada are good mountain tracks no houses on Tierra so thats my go to for Mountain tracks. Go play Los Verdes out on Palos Verdes at 5 am with a glowball and beat the crowds at that place and you are rewarded with great ocean views from a local county muni. If we could get it out of American Golf's hands it might be LA's version of Torrey Pines :/

Angeles National Golf Club ~$60 GolfNow Hot Deal, Jack Nicklaus design desert course reminded me of RTJ Desert Dunes out in Palm Desert, blind shots, no houses, great condition, challenging, hosts lots of amateur tournaments

Moorpark CC ~$80 GolfNow Hot Deal (superb conditions; 27 holes)

Tierra Rejada ~$40 GolfNow Hot Deal, mountainous, scenic, challenging, good conditions, supposedly the owner is looking to sell so not sure how much longer it stays; reminded me of a much larger scale Mt. Woodson in San Diego/Poway

Rustic Canyon ~$40 GolfNow Hot Deal (links style, locals told me Dustin Johnson's main course during his "rehab" supposedly shot course record and another LPGA plays there)

Simi Hills Golf Course muni ~$30 twilight with cart I believe. Awesome course IMO. Rolling fairways, great greens, cheap

From the locals I talked to the Moorpark/ Simi Valley/ San Fernando area courses have a lot to offer. As you already know, traffic is pretty much f*d at all times in LA county.

Lots of guys told me Riverside has a bunch of great tracks and also Ventura/Santa Barbara so unfortunately lots of driving to play worthwhile tracks outside of downtown LA. Check GolfNow for Hot Deal times and underpar.com for Black Gold Golf Club $124/twosome, Oak Creek single $95 all you can play San Piper $130 single (Santa Barbara). I'd love to go back to Santa Barbara & Riverside but it's a lot of driving from San Diego just for golf for me.

^Yeah, also check out the Be Better Golf YouTube channel and play those courses the guy plays in Long Beach/Downey areas. Industry Hills was recommended. I think there were a good amount of cheap ~$40 Hot Deal times all over that area but I only got to do the Moorpark/Simi Valley area the last time I was up there.

Thanks for all the reply's. I think I will be able to leave work early today and get in some holes. Going to try Woodley Lakes since it will be on the way home and has two other course right next door so I shouldn't have to worry about getting on the course. Will try to hit Rustic Canyon soon as well. I am driving back up to SF in a few weeks, so hopefully can hit another course on the Central Coast.

Will Rustic Canyon be in good shape mid February?

Fairway grass will be dormant but the course will play fine.

Definitely gonna try to check out some of the (cheaper) courses in this thread. Can someone give me a general timeline for SoCal golf? What's considered the on-season and the off-season?

East Coast transplant looking to get back into golf.

It is Southern California. Its always in season. Prices dont vary

Going to threadjack this.

I'll have free time Oct 19th to play. Rustic Canyon is a must, and I'll be heading back to Beverly Hills to pick up the gf. Can I do Rustic Canyon early and then something like Rancho Park after and be done at 5ish?

I'll be playing as a single. Calling Rustic tomorrow to see if I can book something or just show up early and get grouped up.

Rustic, unless they recently changed, doesn't take reservations for singles. It'll take you an hour at best to get from Rustic to Rancho. Luckily traffic headed that way is way more tolerable than the other direction. If you tee off in the first few groups you might be able to get 36 in.

I booked as a single for 7a on Saturday morning so it must have changed. They had tee times starting at 6:40a but sunrise isn't until 7:01 that day. I'm not going to book a second round. If I have time I'll squeeze something in at Rancho but assuming it will be very slow on Friday even if I get there at noon (4 hour round + 11a drive to Rancho).

If you're in that area I think Palos Verdes GC still allows some outside play and is a much better. Oak Creek is a bit away but excellent as well

I'm gonna see if my country club can get me on to one of the courses down there. Our pro has some connections.

Your issue at Rancho will be the pace of play. I have been on the course 3 times, never was able to finish 18 as my second round of the day. I either got tired or tired of waiting for 2/3 groups per hole to tee off. Rustic is so awesome! I can’t wait to go back there. It’s a must any time I am in the LA area.

David McLay Kidd just redid Rolling Hills down in Palos Verdes and is supposed to be amazing. Virginia CC nearby is also a fantastic course. Obviously LACC north and Riv are king and are a no brainer if you can get on.
