This Season Has Been A Failure

The LPGA added one major in the last 17 years, the Evian Championship in 2013. How is that a big problem?

 

"Rotate/add/subtract" means a combination of all. I agree the name change doesn't help, because it makes it feel like they are continually changing. I looked it up on Wikipedia below; I guess my thing is, I'm an avid golf fan and I can't name all the LPGA majors off the top, but I can name all the tennis majors and I barely watch Tennis.

 

Per wikipedia (which I guess is a source), women's golf majors:

I get they have stayed fairly consistent into the 2000's, but how do you automatically make the Evian a major?

The Evian was founded in 1994. It became a major 20 years later. How is that "automatic"?

 

They ponied up $3.8 million. With the average purse less than half that amount, I'd say it was worthy of a becoming a major.

The Canadian losing the Major status still bothers me, but nobody came up with the money after the law banning Tobacco companies from sponsoring sports and in the end that's all that matters. I'm surprised RBC hasn't tried to get a Canadian event but they'd probably embarrass too many events even some Majors with the money they throw at golf. They sponsor 2 PGA tournaments and many top players just to get the Canadian Open a better date, I guess they did but still a big-time fail lol

Speaking of Majors sponsors, Ricoh is ending its long standing sponsorship of the Women's British Open. And in my opinion, this is putting the tournament at a cross road.

 

Ladies Golf Union , which founded the WBO, understandably did not have the financial muscle to put up the purse. But things changed when it merged with R&A in 2017. The WBO is now a R&A event, which presumably has the vast resource of the R&A ( and hence the TV money from the Open Championship) . If the R&A is willing to go "sponsorless" , it will instantly elevate the status of the WBO among the majors. maybe just behind ,or someday even rival the USWO.

 

The USWO remains the most coveted championship in women's golf , not only because it is the oldest, but it is the only major without a corporate name in front . It has no Pro-AM in the week. The winner will always be the "USWO Champion" , instead of "XXX USWO Champion", which some day could become "YYY USWO Champion". No doubt USGA loses big money ( which comes from USO TV rights ) every year, but they put the money where the mouth is.

 

Se Ri Pak changed the course of women's golf. Her win at the USWO had driven a generation of Korean girls to the sport. But few may remember she actually won another major BEFORE she won the USWO. But no Korean girl has ever said she picked up a golf club because she saw Se Ri winning the "McDonald's LPGA Championship" in 98.

 

 

Come on R&A , do the right thing for the girls.
