Maltby TS-1 review

Just received the TS-1's in the mail today. 3-pw with x100 shaft. +2 in, standard loft and lie. Pure white jumbo grips (I'm a big guy). I am an 8 handicap.

I was pretty skeptical to order these. I was worried they would be pretty chunky for a blade. I love the profile of blade irons but need a little bit of forgiveness. I own the TE forged as well and really like those but was wanting more blade. After thinking about it and researching as much as I could (which since they are new there isn't much on them) I ordered them.

Right away when I unboxed these I was very impressed. Very sleek and sexy. They look much better in person than on golfworks (golfworks needs to really work on that). A little thicker than a traditional blade but not much. When compairing them to the TE forged the top line is slightly thicker but the sole is thinner, straighter, and looks like less bounce. You get the feeling of more of a blade at address.

I took these out to the range and hit about 50 balls. They are great. Maltby playability factor is like 700+ but I wouldn't say they are that forgiving. They basically play like you would hope and expect. Feels bladey with a little help. Great feedback. The first several shots, as I was trying to find the sweet spot, I definitely felt it. But once you find that sweet spot they feel amazing. Distance was pretty long. Was hitting them about 10 yards longer than my current gamers (F7's). I didn't get these on a simulator but I would suspect these don't have the spin you would find in a traditional blade. Workability is pretty decent was hitting some good fades. Sound isn't bad, a little clicky.

All in all good value. With the x100 shafts, pure grips, and free assembly I paid $600. I'll take it!

I would recommend these for low to mid handicap. Like I said they aren't as forgiving as maltby says they are on their playability scale. They are more of a blade with some help. So if you like blades but aren't the perfect ball striker these may be for you.

If you have questions ask away and I can try and answer.

I also gave the TS1 a try out. Impressive. I had the same shaft in my CF16 7 iron and the TS1 7 iron.

It was almost a dead heat. I could easily play either one with no loss of distance, direction or dispersion.

I liked the feel of the CF16 just a hair better and I already have them in my bag or.....

A hidden gem for sure if you are even close to a players iron.

Curious if anyone has done a head to head with the p760s yet since they seem to be similar in construction?

Pretty sure Popeye has posted about this comparison.

In that thread, Popeye compares the TS-2, not TS-1 to the TM P790, not the new P760.

These TS-1's look absolutely great in every way. According to the Golfworks site the blade length is 80.2mm long so it will be very comparable to the P790 more so than the much smaller head of the P760.

I was intrigued so I picked up a TS-1 5-iron. This was the first Maltby iron that I ever considered, let alone ordered.

I have to say I was surprised by the very low profile of this head. The hosel is much shorter and BBGM is 15/16". This must be how Maltby gets such low VCOG numbers.

I was hoping this would be similar to the i500 or P790 but it's profile is more closely related to my wife's 716 AP1.

Here's a pic of the TS-1 5-iron with a KZG Forged Evolution 5-iron (i.e. a somewhat more traditionally sized head) for comparison.

TS1 is an impressive set of irons. I've played 790 and like TS1 better for sure. Only tested 760 and not played full round on course. Can work both ways, very playable/forgiving, thinner sole, solid feel, consistent gaps for me. I will give a more complete review sometime, but with right shaft / fit for game don't think you can go wrong for a single digit player.

Just built up a set of TS-1s with C Taper shafts which i picked up form other forum members. I only got out once since I put those together but hit the ball great and tied my low round and the driver was on the fritz and pulled everything left. The irons striking was spot on and forgiving especially with the level of wind.

I'd like to resurrect this thread - anyone still rocking the TS1 irons?
