Pennsylvania course needed

So my Wife and I are on a quest to play golf in all 50 states. We are currently staying in the Poconos area (Shawnee on Delaware).

 

Our current plan is to play Ballyowen in NJ tomorrow 10/2. We are then playing Trump Ferry Point in NY on Wednesday.

 

Here’s where I need help: Our current agenda is to drive to Bedford on Thursday and play the Omni Old Course. My issue is all the wetness, possible cart path only, and plugged balls. Plus the drive there.

 

Are there any highly rated courses in PA between where I am now and say Gettysburg (where we will be Friday) for us to play instead?

The West Course at Hershey is pretty good IMO, and right on the way to Gettysburg. Not sure if you need to stay at the resort to play there though. The East course isn't bad but I think West is the superior one.

 

There are a lot of golf courses along your route, but unfortunately the superior ones are almost all private. The public offerings are generally decent courses but nothing special or anything you will remember next year. If you are a member of a club where you live, a call from your pro could probably get you on at least half if not more of the private courses in that area during the week. Jack Frost National and Berkleigh are good public offerings, Colonial CC in Harrisburg was good as of a couple years ago when I played it, a private course that went semi-private. I don't know too much about courses on the Gettysburg end. You could play some of the nicer Philly area publics like Wyncote, Glen Mills, Lederach, or Jeffersonville if you veer your route out of the way down south, but it will probably add considerable time and traffic.

I was in State College over the weekend and drove through Bedford to get there. Things have dried out enough in the region that plugged balls, etc shouldn’t be an issue. It may still be cart path only though.

 

Last I checked, you did have to stay at Hershey to play there.

Links at Gettysburg is a nice course, but I haven't played it this year so I can't speak to conditions.

check out Jack Frost National -- a hidden gem for sure and a steal by most accounts.

Played blue ridge trail and was favorably impressed in 2017, Route 81/Route 80 intersection.

if you could do 2 courses in 1 day, you could easily go from NJ to jack frost in the am, then blue ridge in the afternoon...done that myself.

Quail Valley in Littlestown is nice. It's little south of Gettysburg, but in good condition even after all the rain this year.

Royal Manchester is around York and I've heard great things about it. Never played personally though.

My choice would be Royal Manchester in York, linksy course similar to Links at Gettysburg.

 

If you want to go through Lancaster, I'd recommend Iron Valley, it is like two separate courses in 18 holes.

Try Wyncote in Avondale, Pa. Its just off route 1 about a half hour away from Wilmington, De.

When I lived in Hershey last year, the Hershey CC courses were Private (having to stay at Hershey Hotel or Lodge or be a member.) I couldn't even play when working for the company...

 

I played the Par-Line course near Elizabethtown with my buddy all the time, got on for 10$ half the time.
