2019 And The Pin Is In

Recommended Posts

Played with the pin in for 18. I was putting lights out, hit everything inside 8ft ever with aerated greens. However, a man in my foursome couldn’t say the same. He hit a nice putt, just offcenter of the pin, that did not fall. The ball 100% would have fallen had the pin not been in. We all kind of stood there in awe when it happened.

How fast was it going?

The tests clearly indicate that sometimes leaving the pin in will reject a putt that otherwise would have gone in and vice versa. Most agree that in the long run a higher percent will be helped than hurt by leaving the pin in.

Of the 20 or so guys I normally play with from time to time we are down to two holdouts and one of them seems to be waffling about whether to bother asking for it to be pulled. Sometimes he does, as often he does not.

I predict by this time next year, at least among my circle of golf acquaintances, pulling the flag will be very rare at the club/local course level among weekend golfers.

I don't feel one way or the other about it. In all the groups I've played with the most times it comes out is a) shadow b) leaning a particular direction, c) shortish putts. Everyone uderstands it's an option, not a requirement are are quick to help those that either want it in or out. I only played one round of the 30 plus so far with the new rule where someone got anywhere near uptight with it in or out... they wanted it removed, walked up in a huff, and yanked it out. Well, if they had just said something and asked one of the others to remove it, we would have (and we told him that too...).

This is exactly how my usual group is playing it. Leave it in until we are all within about 10 feet and then we pull it. Now that the greens are finally drying out, if somebody has a slick looking downhill putt they will go first and then pull the pin when they are done, we kind of changed our putting order to whomever wants the pin in will hit first and then remove it.
