Doobie Brothers - What a Fool Believes

Didn’t know this thread existed, but since my profile pic has been Michael McDonald since I created my account, it only seemed fitting that I post this song.

Also, I’m into recording music about as much as I’m into golf, and I collect and restore old recording gear and instruments. An interesting fact is that I own the two keyboards you see at the beginning of the video: The Yamaha CP-70b Electric Grand Piano (great for touring back in the late 70s/80s because it could be amplified and broke down into two pieces, which was much easier than lugging a real grand piano across the country) and the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 synthesizer. There were geniuses like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs that were building ultra modern and expensive computers in the Silicon Valley in the early 80s and there were also guys like Dave Smith building ultra modern and expensive musical electronic instruments in the same place, you just hear about first names more. Both types of fellows are/were legendary. Just some pointless info for you guys. Hit ’em straight!

Brain

Great first post here, Brain!

When time allows, would you mind sharing the story of how you procured the piano and synth?  I'm guessing there's a good story there AND do you have any other good equipment procurement stories?

Brain welcome to the great music place.

I graduated H.S. in 1979.

Your featured song was a top five favorite of mine during my senior year.

I'll add another Doobie....

motorcycle advertisement vintage - Flashbak

Holy cow!  That Yamaha cycle takes me back!   Used to get dragged around the country in mid 70s (Dad retired from military and divorced his wife/my Mom 1972) towing a 17 foot Airstream.   He was letting off steam and we were along for the ride.

I would get legit upset he wouldn't let me take my BMX bicycle along.   But a few Summers in a row I got to ride a bike just like that Yamaha pictured (my cousins Yamaha).  We always made a few week stop at my Dad's hometown.   It was in a very small town in North Dakota.  I remember being quite proud they let me ride it out to the cemetery on my own to visit my Grandparents graves.  The town was so small they could see the cemetery from the kitchen window keeping tabs on me.

Weird.  The only time I rode a motorcycle (mid 70s) was years before I had drivers license.  I look back on those days astonished I was taught, and learned,  how to operate the darned thing.

See there is more than just musical magic on this thread is there not Steele47?

Fab flashback !

I cruised the  trails of Rochester Hills, Michigan (a northern Detroit suburb) with my pack of neighborhood brats in the early 70's as a 13 year old on this jewel.

I might tell a bit more about my adventures with my CT-70 in the coming days.

Cool stuff indeed Steele.

The small motorized two wheeler's from back in the day surely provided us with some b****'n times !

I remember that lil sucker.  That would have been more my speed (I am a lil guy)  But those few summers in ND are cherished memories.  I got to ride a motorcycle.  I got to ride a horse.  ( which did not go well)  I got a taste of very small town life which again I cherish since I was raised in fairly large towns/cities.   AND,  I got memories of seeing my Dad relieved to be back home relaxing after many years of dealing with 'Life' in general.  I did not know what he was dealing with at the time, but I do now.
