Bit the bullet today.... MP-18 SC wins over i210

I’ve been shopping for irons for a few months on indoor monitors waiting for the weather to warm enough to go outside for a proper fitting. Today was the day. I had narrowed my search down to the Ping i210 and Mizuno MP-18 SC. While I warmed up, I flushed my 714 AP2’s. Of course that always happens when you are about to get something new. The fitter, who’s also a PGA teaching pro first had me to use the shaft selection tool from Mizuno. It gave him feedback that I need a heavy X-stiff shaft. My AP2’s have DG S300’s in them. I was surprised at this recommendation as I’ve never even considered an X-stiff. Fr there we started hitting shots with the different shafts in both the i210 and MP-18. I tried 5 different shafts and ended up landing on the Nippon Modus Tour 105 (112g) in X-stiff with the MP-18 SC head. I wanted to like the Ping, but the Mizuno was just incredible with that shaft. The ball flight, tight dispersion, and the feel of the Mizuno won me over. Now the wait is on until they come in.

Welcome to the family! You're gonna love your new SC's. Had mine for over a year now coming off of years of AP2. Feel is something special. Cheers.

Thank you. I liked my AP2’s, they were just pretty gross after 6 years of use. I wanted something different this time. I did try the 718 AP2’s but I liked the feel of the Ping and Mizuno’s more when I began playing around with new irons.

Hummm. So the fitter ignored the fitting tool. A Modus 105x is not “heavyâ€.

If they felt good and your numbers were good I guess that all that matters.

Ive never really put much trust in that mizuno tool.

No he did not ignore it. I hit two very, very similar shots with the DG 120 x-stiff and the 105x. My feedback to him was that the heavier shaft shot felt absolutely dead to me in my hands. The shot looked great but was absolutely muted in feel. The shot with the 105x that had relatively the same trajectory, distance, and ball speed felt alive in my hands. I knew it was absolutely hit in the screws. That is the feeling I prefer. It was odd to me that the heavier shaft felt so dead. The DG S300 I have played for years is 124g.

Modus shafts do have a nice feel to them.

A little bit different profile myself, but MP-18’s all-around are just incredible!

Do you know if the Mizuno Optimizer is the new version? And if it produced any lie angles?

Yes, it was the new one. He mentioned that they just sent him the new one. He did not mention that it produced a recommended lie angle.

for me the i210 were longer, more forgiving and much easier to launch. The 18 feel amazing though but out of my pay grade for sure

That is why I was hoping to love the i210s. I think they are at the most reasonable price point of any iron on the market. Aesthetically, the i210s look incredible as well. I just did not€™t hit a shot with them that made me believe I would be happy with them for the next 5-6 years.
