Anyone know what this is inside hosel?

I have two fairway heads currently loose and was dry fitting a shaft in them both and noticed the playing length was different in both with the same shaft. Looking further, seems like there’s a powder inside the hosel of one of them preventing the shaft from going in further than the other one.

 

The head on the left just appears to have a powder inside it - not sure if that’s just epoxy/shaft residue since it was pulled. The one on the right doesn’t have this. I don’t have a small wire brush handy to see if I can clean out the one on the left but figured I’d post the pics here and see if anyone can shed some light on this.

The one on the right looks like you are down to the bore plug, where you should be. Left one appears to still have old epoxy in the hosel still.

 

And no, don't pull what's on the right one out. That plug is supposed to be there and seals the hosel away from the head cavity.

Ok thanks. That’s what I thought but wanted to make sure. If I can’t find a brush attachment for my drill to try to clean it out, I’ll bring it to my builder.

 

No chance it would be intentionally there for weight purposes correct? I’ve never dealt with tip weights or anything so just wanted to rule that out.

 

Edit - meaning cleaning the residue on the one on the left. I won’t touch the one on the right. 10-4 on the bore plug.

If you want to clean out the old epoxy, heat up the hosel to loosen the epoxy and use one of these - https://www.golfworks.com/hosel-honing-wire-brush/p/gw1060/

Heat and bore brush should clean it up. Once the epoxy sets, it doesn't come out as easily any more. I never understand why people don't clean them out when they pull the shafts out when the epoxy is soft and broken down.

Those brushes are the shizznit! Just make sure you get ones that are the right size.

Yep, and always keep a few extra on hand. They're cheap. I can speak from recent experience that there's nothing worse than having one break and being down until the new ones arrive.

That tool looks awesome. Gonna get one of those.

If you don’t want to wait for it...I’ve always done this. Roll a small piece about 2 inch by 2 inch piece of 60-80 grit sandpaper. Cone it slightly and slide into the hosel. Use a drill bit that fits snuggly into the opening in the sandpaper and slowly start to drill it. Cleans that old epoxy right up.

Wire brushes clean up the hosel walls real well but I find heat and an old narrow chisel does a much better job of getting most of the material out - particularly at base of the bore. Also saves wear and tear on the wire brush so they last longer. Even a flat head screw driver can be used the same way if you've softened up the old epoxy enough by reheating.
