I’ll never forget those two guys at Prairie Bluff. They were incredibly ahead of their time in the worst possible way. But listening to sports talk radio on a golf course is next level lowest common denominator trash. And the Eagles? The just barely above .500 Eagles? Oof.

The young player had his head buried in his phone most of the round. Late in the round he was driving towards a single file bridge, and there was a cart coming the other way halfway across the bridge. They obviously had the right of way, but with his head buried in his phone while he was driving he didn't see them until the last minute. He finally looked up a few feet before the foot of the bridge, slammed on the brakes on the gravel path, and nearly crashed into the bridge railing and oncoming cart. Don't remember ever seeing a head-on collision on a golf course.

My "favorite" on course music story came from when we played the Odyssey, which was easily in hearing range of RiotFest or some equivalent going on at the World Music Theatre New World Music Theatre Tweeter Center First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre The Hollywood Casino Amphitheater. As we meandered the property, we heard every profanity laced lyric imaginable. Then, we came across a backyard full of probably 10 year old's and their parents, celebrating a kid's bday party, who were being subjected to Ozzy, Megadeath and a lot of other bands that I've never heard of.  

 

It was so nice for little Johnny's parent to have those kids taught a whole other vocabulary.

Indeed I am a walker and a carrier, and on this day I took a carry bag instead of a stand. I should have gone with common sense and ridden as it was 90+, humid and sunny, but seeing as my cart partner option was said offender I decided to see how far I could go carrying for the round. On the 11th hole at Schaumburg (2 Tournament) we both found the fairway speed slot that runs directly into the left fairway bunker. Said gentleman is older and not exactly a quick player, and seeing as how he hit first, barely got out and still had a full shot in, I offered to rake the bunker for him on the way out from my own shot so he could keep moving. As I got settled in to my stance in the bunker I hear a crunch from behind me; I knew immediately. I look behind me to see my bag underneath the cart between the front and back wheels, and hear the driver say "what in the heck was that?" Like a dog in a driveway he decided to get it with the back wheels to get it out. Rattled, I hit my approach off the green and chip to 3 feet, and upon pulling my putter see that the shaft is clearly bent. I tried to slyly putt out with a wedge so as to not bring attention to it and make him feel bad, but it was immediately noticed. I made the putt, which began a streak of 3 straight wedge 1 putts and a birdie putt that lipped out. I dropped a 12 footer and lipped out 2 15 foot or so putts as well down the stretch. Side note: if anybody has a putter suggestion that mimics the mechanics of bellying a wedge I've got a bunch of money at the ready.

 

Our playing partner and buddy felt terrible about it, so I did my best to be cool, but at first I was pretty ticked. In hindsight I realized that of all the clubs in the bag to have the shaft bend or break on, this is by far the easiest and cheapest to replace, so I really did come out lucky on this one. Had it been my driver or worse my irons it could have been costly. My rangefinder case has a deep grass stain on it but fortunately made it through the ordeal.

 

2nd part of the story, as I've never experienced a round at Schaumburg without some sort of issue with the staff, is that a buddy left his wallet at the turn buying a hot dog and didn't realize until after the round. Upon asking the starter, he mentioned someone had indeed found a wallet and confirmed it was the owners name, but he had no idea where it was. Starter referred us to the pro shop, pro shop referred us to the bar, bar said ask the cart girl, cart girl wanted @DavePelz4's phone number and wallet. Nothing, very curious as something was found and the exact name was known, but no information. I went off on my own to ask around and went to ask the girl at the turn what might have happened, and ended up talking to the starter instead, very pleasant and understanding conversation. As we sit down to drinks after the round, a guy in the group behind us (also our crew) says hey I found Bob's wallet at the turn. Mystery solved. We tally up our scores, have a drink and I head out. On the way out I hear somebody yell at me from a car, and turn around to see said starter on his way home. He proceeds to begin to reprimand me for all the ruckus that we caused and for getting the staff all whipped into a frenzy (as if asking the staff for assistance is too much to ask on something as troublesome as a lost wallet), claiming the staff felt offended and disrespected in the way that it was handled, demanding an apology. I stopped him, informed him I was witness to everything, not the "offender" and that no such rudeness occurred, so please don't reprimand me over it. I told him the girl that supposedly felt offended was in the bar talking with us later, laughing and joking, so either she got over it or somebody along the line was exaggerating. He apologized, we talked it over, and he drove off. Gotta love retirees going off on generations younger than them just because they feel they can.

One addition, there happened to be a scramble outing at Schaumburg on Saturday, and I remembered just how tight the course can feel with holes so close to each other. I don't know whether to be comforted by the fact that Covid golfers have learned to yell "FORE" or concerned by the frequency with which I heard it.

VNtuz - That's what I envisioned. I figured it had to happen outside a fairway bunker or a hazard. As that's the one place a carry bag might not be dropped right next to you, but still located in an area a cart would be able to traverse.

 

I hope me asking didn't give you PTSD. Sounds like you were fortunate and that your putter didn't have a $300 shaft in it like everyone else here, lol.

Nah, a shaft is an easy fix and I have probably a half dozen replacements in the basement if needed. It honestly could have been so much worse, had it gotten the putter head and bent or snapped that neck I'd have been beside myself as it was the one I stamped with my daughter's name and birth date. I can't imagine my SIM driver would have held up either.

 

And at least I didn't do it to myself, as that shamefully was a part of my younger golfing self. Bent shafts, broken shafts, snapped putter head, etc are all memories I have unfortunately. Uhoh, here comes that PTSD, I think I need a drink...

Did not have all those details V. Glad the putter head wasn't damaged.  

 

None of us were anything but gracious to the staff at SGC. Nary a negative word was said.  Maybe the sticks were just jammed too far up their arses at the start of the day.

Not sure if you recall my story about the Schaumburg starter, it was just as bad.  It would be insane if it was the same gentlemen.  I haven't been back since...too many options around where I can avoid the constant dodging of golf balls.  That said, they keep the conditions really nice.

Not quite Chicagoland, but has anyone played Quincy Country Club or Panther Creek in Springfield? 

 

My club has reciprocal with them and was going to check 1 out next week but don't really know much about either.

Played it probably 5 years ago and enjoyed it a lot.  Pretty sure it hosted the LPGA event when State Farm was a sponsor for a few years. Top notch conditions from the range throughout the course although the layout is just OK.  

 

My only complaint is I never saw any panthers on the course so it was false advertising.
