Williamsburg Course Rankings

Planning a weekend trip for a group of guys from DC and thinking of doing 4 rounds over a Saturday and Sunday in October. Thinking Golden Horseshoe Gold and Green on Saturday, but need recommendations for the two courses on Sunday. Here’s what I’m looking at but let me know if I should look at others. Have played Ford’s Colony and it was a 6-hour round on the weekend, won’t do it again.

 

- Royal New Kent & Viniterra

- Kingsmill (both courses)

- Kiskiack

- Colonial Heritage

- Williamsburg National

I'm playing National in a few weeks and report back. Seems the last couple of years summer has taken it's toll on that course (irrigation is there, they just don't like to use it much). Having played all on your list I would pick Kiskiack and Viniterra.

Royal New Kent need at least two rounds. First one to figure out where to hit it and the second to enjoy. Solid 4.5 hours with no hold ups.

I played Brickshire (adjacent to Royal New Kent) about five years ago and it was a solid course.

Last time I played Royal New Kent, the pro shop told me that it was a 5-hour golf course. Don't expect to zip around the golf course on a weekend.

I believe you have to be an overnight guest or a member of Kingsmill resort to play either course. Sounds like you're neither or else you wouldn't be asking what your other courses are?

williamsburg national is trash. i'd go new kent and/or kingsmill's courses

Go with Golden Horseshoe. Gold is harder than Green but both great courses. Great staff and scenery as well.

FYI - if you’re staying at one of the Colonial Williamsburg hotels you get a discount on your round at either Golden Horseshoe course and anything in the pro shop. Let them know before you pay (they can confirm through their system). Also In order to play either Kingsmill course you have to stay at their resort.

There are two must play courses in that area: Golden Horseshoe- Gold Course and Royal New Kent. Make sure you play those two. After that most of the others mentioned are good enough to fill out your schedule.

Agreed. Horseshoe Gold and RNK are musts. Kingsmill River finishing holes are fun. Kiskiack is a good deal. Colonial Heritage is a good deal and challenging. Interested to see what Stonehouse looks like after it's re-opening. On the private side, Two Rivers is legit. Horseshoe Gold and Green just announced new mid-day and twilight rates. Gold- mid day $99 (11am-2:50pm), twilight $69 (after 3pm)

Green- mid-day $59, twilight $45

Played at Williamsburg National Yorktown course this week for the first time. I’ve always played Jamestown so this was a good change. Pretty impressed with the course. Only having a range finder it went well going in blind. Fairways and rough were pretty plush for Bermuda in southern VA at the end of July. Bentgrass greens were solid and true. Played the Blue tee box with no issues besides a couple hard hooks OB, I got around fine other than that. Number 18 is a stinker of a par 5 with a fairly small landing area or forced long carry over a bunker for an easy go in 2.

Stonehouse from what I heard last night has lost its greens again. They apparently reseeded in the spring with bent. No go in this area. No idea why it didn’t get changed to Champions Burmuda.

Edit to add that Kiskiack looked fantastic. Went there Tuesday for range and putting time. Didn’t make it back over to play.

I played Golden Horseshoe Green, Kiskiack and Colonial Heritage last year in late Sept when the area was having like 2 weeks of rain. Golden Horseshoe was our last round on the dryest day, but it was the sloppiest course. Played Colonial Heritage in spotty showers and the course held up well. Kiskiack was by far my favorite of the three. I haven't been to Williamsburg National courses in 8 years. We're going again the last week of Sept. and plan on playing Kiskiack, both WN courses, and looking at Viniterra or RNK.
