Some Pics of my Favorite tour Irons

Recommended Posts

TM, Cleveland, and a couple of Nike's
Well it is to cold for a round so I thought I would take some Pics of my sets and post them.

Cleveland 588 tour issue Satin stamped with players initials
Taylor Made Satin Lehman square toes
Nike split cavity
Nike Pro-Combo Satin with player’s initials

I have to say these are my favorites. The looks of these heads fit my eye. Everyone is different when it comes to his or her favorites. I like these because they all have very traditional looks about them. Especially address position they all possess minimal offset (Cleveland the most) and thin top lines. The back of the sole sticks out on the pro combos a little too much for me, but it is expectable. They all have a solid "players cavity" look that I have grown to require. I also like the satin look if I can get it, and I have always been a sucker for the premium forgings that Endo (Nike) and Miura provide. I would have a hard time picking the feel out of a line up, but knowing that a reputable house has forged them seems to be good for me. That being said I have hit the Cleveland 588's like this before and it is truly surprising that they feel as soft as they are. The Cleveland heads are smaller than the others. Great looking set however. I just got them in and cant wait to hit them. The Taylor Made 300 forged Lehman grinds and the Nike Split cavity backs are Miura forged and both feel fantastic (for those of you that might be new).

The Nike Split-Cavity are awesome looking! How hard is it to find a set?

It is very hard (and expensive) to find a set of Nike split cavities. You can buy something very similar with the Miura CB-1005 (Japan version) or CB-201 (US version). I have the CB-201 and they are great!

not hard .... I could be convinced to sell mine 3-PW...Rac Proto's are treating me well enough to be tempted to off them.

Acquiring a set of Nike Splits isn’t that easy. You have to spam a lot of people that might have them and post a WTB ad in the classifieds a few times. I would say for $1500 to $1800 you could get one in a month. Wait for 4 months you could grab a good set for $800 to $1200.00. A seller had one on E-bay a couple of weeks ago in a one-day auction. Sold for 700.00 and change. Wowowow. That is a great price. Joe Kwok claims they could be some of the best-made heads he has seen and worked on. Soft as butter, great grooves, and all around tight job making these.

I like the minimal offset also. The offsets of all of these heads are varied. The TM and Splits are the less of the bunch. The TM has the least. I had a set of Nike Split cavity from Trevor Immelman. They had a lot more offset than these. Great set though. The set in the picture were spinned and Floed by Joe Kwok. He said that the 3 and 4 irons had a hozel grind to minimize the look of off-set to the player. Then the 5-pw had the standard grinds on the hozels. It was hard for me to pick it out.

These Cleveland’s have a great look. Hard to explain it. The head is very compact and has some great lines on them. The top line and neck seem to have been ground real well. More rounded of than the Taylor Made's.

I went to a set of X-tours for most of the season searching for a more forgiving head and simply couldn’t do it. After the course and conditions dried up for the year the bounce on the x-tours became an issue for me. They had too much. Felt like a hammer hitting the ground. So I have been back and forth between the Pro combos and the TM 300 forged. The Nike combos are in a rifle shaft that came with the clubs. I think 6.5 and they are weighing at D2. The feel is good but my standard d3 using S400 came through after bringing back the dinosaurs from out of hiding the TM 300's. After a few rounds with the old stand buys I am having a hard time going away from them now.

Now the Nike Splits are shafted with True Temper Tour Concept x100. I intend to give them some time to see if I like them or not.

The Cleveland 588's? Well they were just to damn pretty to pass up. They will be hanging around for a while. They came in stamped with the player’s initials on the hozels. Also a great grip set-up I have never seen. The grips are Golf Pride Victory velvet cord that has ribs in them. The rib was rotated to about 8:00. Normal installation is at 6:00 and these were turned clockwise to about 7:30 to 8:00. Feels weird. I wonder why. Also the green cord grip goes well with these traditional gems.

More pics. The Cleveland is an older set I sold last spring. They were Don Poole's. Great looking set. Very simular to the ones I just picked up. Then the other 2 Pics are of the 8 iron of the stain Pro combo set. Great compact looking head. 8-pw are blades.

Got to like those Nike split cavities, mint or what.

TM 300s were spoiled by different forging qualities, the difference between the Miura, Chinese and Mexican heads was scary. First sets were sweet, later heads were harsh and dinged like hell.

As for 588s they go down as the worst set of irons I have ever owned, almost no sweetspot and very unforgiving even in the scoring clubs. Kept the square groove sand iron and dumped the rest for $150.

What gets me is why the manufacturers tart up retail models with extra detail, logos etc when 90% of single digit golfers want a simple head with clean lines and no embellishments. The tour versus retail Nike Pro Combos being the worst offenders ever.

Agree. The extra lines, holes, grahics, etc are nasty at times. I like the simple look over the busy look.

I just love those 588P's. How difficult it is to acquire set of those? Impossible? =(

You have dug up a year old post. I would say that it is possible. You have to scoure E-bay and have e-bay send you email notifications. I would have it set for "588" or spmething like that.
