Carry on with a single club

I'm traveling on Labor day weekend wanted to take my putter only. Has anyone done this? On the TSA website it looks like that is a no go. I have seen people carry on tennis racquets, fishing rods, etc.

Yeah, they are going to frown at you trying to bring a putter on a plane... Just buy a used one at the local golf store when you get on ground!

If they would let you carry on a club I would still have a very cool old bullseye style Mizuno putter. I bought it in the parking lot of a GC while on vacation in Hawaii for $5 and used it for a few rounds. Ended up donating it to a thrift store before I left. I also re-donated the clubs and bag I bought for $10 at the same thrift store.

Ring them. - try to get it in writing / proof you've been allowed to carry it if they give you the green light.

If it's a blade putter, wrap the head with some fabric, turn it upside down, fake a limp and use it as a walking stick. ;)

I once bought a putter on a trip and another time bought a fairway wood. I was not able to bring them as carry ons, but they helped me get a big plastic bag (the ones they use for putting strollers in) and I got to check them in free of charge both times. No problem whatsoever.

They both had headcovers on as well. Don’t think they got tossed around much more than they do during a normal round in my carry bags, but I can understand the feeling.

I appreciate everyones input. I called and do need my own putter for the fitting. As per the TSA, you can not carry on a golf club.

I did find, on a travel website, a person that made a club carrier out of 6 inch PVC pipe using duct tape to seal it. My worry there would be the TSA rips into the tape and does not replace it. Another option I put in a different thread. SKB makes a small hard side club carrier. At $175 its a commitment but carrying two customized Scott's it may be the best option.

For that price why not just spend $15 to ship it to the fitter so that its there when you get there and then have the putters shipped home? No way I would trust any of my putters to a homemade solution like that - and they arent even worthy anything.

side note, if you wanted to check it you can get relatively cheap hard sided rifle cases that can fit up to a few clubs no problem. My dad does that when he visits me(gets free checked luggage, has a set of clubs at my house and where he lives but only likes to use his one putter)
