Cocky Comments

Mentioned this in another thread. But it occurred to me that it fit here. Maybe one of my favorite comments ever because of who said it.

Mr Palmer answering Roger Maris by asking “ what the F are you doing here “? That’s balls in a wheelbarrow territory. Not so much because he said it in private. But because he tells that story on himself later.

**Byron Nelson used to ask every course he played, “What is the course record and who holds it?”

If it was the club’s pro, he wouldn’t break it out of respect...if not, he’d say “Well, I guess I’ll break it.”

Then he would...every course in north Texas had its lowest round ever by Byron Nelson(not hogan) for most of my life unless the local clubs pro held the record

That’s true and straight up all-time cocky

The best thing that ever happened to Ben Hogan's career was the day Byron Nelson retired.

Thanks for the link. I wasn't familiar and I certainly wouldn't have understood your post without it. LMAO

_If that 1960 season didn't win him the Grand Slam, it did earn him the Hickok Belt, then awarded to the professional athlete of the year. Palmer was a finalist along with Maris, the **New York Yankees slugger **who spotted the golfer at the banquet and **said, "What the f- - - are you doing here?**"

_

_I asked Palmer how he replied to Maris. "I didn't say a goddamn word to him," he said. "I didn't say a word until after it was all over, and then I didn't need to say anything." Palmer had the Hickok Belt in his hands as he walked past Maris. "That's what my father taught me," he said. "Don't say anything, just do it."_

Thanks for the post. It even made more sense to me that way. Lol. I need a ghost writer.

Nice...

I asked Palmer how he replied to Maris. "I didn't say a goddamn word to him," he said....."That's what my father taught me," he said. "Don't say anything, just do it."

Johnny Miller had some good ones

I read an article where he discusses the importance of being self assured on the course. And he was very coc ky for his run in the mid 1970's ... about golf. There's a difference. Like Johnny said "how can you be the best if you don't believe you are?" He was effectively world #1 for 3 or 4 years, 73-76 .. even Jack has said that.

Weiskopf was a great commentator, at one Masters he was asked what Jack was thinking and he said "If I knew that I'd have won 3 of these things"

And his famous quote on JWN is awesome as listed above ... "you knew Jack was going to beat you, Jack knew he was going to beat you and Jack knew that you knew he was going to beat you"

That is what he’d say about Jack’s putt in that video. Robert is from the outskirts of Detroit. He has played in some Pebble PGA events.

I believe he also caught walleye from the dock and was an amateur cowboy who moonlighted as a painter at one point. Real jack of all trades , but really just a kid at heart.
