Changing Sound of Putter

I recently got a new putter, 303SS with fly milled face. Milling produced a soft impact feel, but a higher pitched ‘ping’ sound than my preference (it’s a deep cavity, suspect face is thin to purposely get higher pitched sound).

Since lighter than my 365 gram preference, I used regular lead lead to completely fill the cavity. The result is a lower pitched sound (more of a ‘pong’). I’m wondering if either high density lead tape or tungsten putty in the cavity further changes the feel further (or other materials in the cavity). Does anyone have experience filling cavities that successfully changes the sound?

I've put lead tape on my old Cameron Newport on the heel/toe and I get more of a clicky sound instead of a deader ping. Never took off the tape to compare again but pretty sure it's related

If your fly milled face is fine shallow milling, that’s probably causing a lot of the higher pitch sound. A deeper face milling would produce a quieter impact.

This. If you want that soft feel and solid sound, you need very deep milling.

The putter already has a mid to deep fly milled face. The higher pitch sound comes mostly from a thinner face wall (deeper cavity). That’s why I’ve experimented with lead tape in the cavity. Wondering if anyone has tried silicone rubber or other materials, even hot melt?

I've tried filling the cavity with epoxy and lead powder mixed together and had a great more muted feeling. I used a dental vibrator to get bubbles out of the epoxy and got a clean even finish. I then painted over it to cover the "insert" . It would be great to make a wooden cavity insert to mute the feel too, that's if you're great at woodworking. If I remember well either Olson or Lamb even did one with leather...

A wooden cavity insert sounds interesting. I’m going to try a silicone drum dampener gel pad. Will report back on how it works.

+1 on your advice, thinner cavity produces higher pitched ting, not face milling. Deep milling will produce a softer muted feel which in many instances ruins the feedback IMO .

 

I prefer the TP Mills putters for this reason. Most of David's putters have a thicker face and would say medium milling which gives more a a meaty solid thunk at impact.

Had to revive this, as I'm looking to filter some HF sound from a new putter i just got.

 

Totally agree on the thickness behind the face being the main source.  With the variety of putters I have, the face thickness/cavity depth is the main culprit.  However, the current one I'm looking at has a thin sole in part of the flange.  That thing also resonates.  Going to try sound dampening tape or roofing tape, which appears to be the same thing.  But I'd love to hear other experiences on reversible solutions.

@rfc Could try experimenting with some 'Blu-Tac'?
I use it to adhere hobby craft 5/7gram Lead wheel weights to my putter

good call, definitely will give that a go.  I'll report with results.

Last year I had some lead powder put down the shaft of one of my putters to increase the weight. I also noticed after the fact that it deadened the sound and feel, which was an added bonus.

 

I may try my the same on my Evnroll, or possibly cotton balls since I don’t want to increase the head weight.
