Current Ping Iron Lineup Shootout

It was mentioned earlier in the thread, but bears repeating - the standard lofts for the 7 irons mentioned vary significantly. It's as much as 4* between the BP & iBlade and the G410. Actual loft numbers are 34* for BP & iBlade, 33* for i210, 30.5 for i500 and 30* for G410.

In other words, compare a BP, iBlade or 210 6 iron v. G410 7 iron and I would estimate the distance difference will be nil. Dispersion is a different story, due to forgiveness.

The launch, peak heights and ball flights are completely different loft for loft because of the technology. You are wanting to handicap one club, to make a comparison. So let's say you do this with the i210 and the G700. The i210 6 iron and G710 7 iron are both 29.5 degrees. But when you look at the specs the i210 6 iron is 1/2" longer, so in theory you can expect worse dispersion from the i210, and that extra extra length should give the i210 a ball speed advantage, but it doesn't. Then extrapolating the numbers from the OP's post, the G710 7 iron was flying 1 yard higher than the i210 7 iron, so it is reasonable to assume that the peak height of the i210 6 iron would be even lower. So the G710 7 iron would have at least a 3 yard height advantage(my testing has shown more) over an i210 6 iron. That higher ball flight with a few hundred rpm less spin from the G710 would still give it a distance advantage loft for loft without sacrificing stopping power.

So even if you try to handicap the G710 7 iron distance by putting it against the i210 6 iron, the G710 would still come out ahead. In reality that difference in distance would be even larger if we put a 37" shaft in the i210 6 iron to match the 37" shaft in the G710 7 iron.

I did a mini-version of this at the golf expo in early February.

I'm going to move to graphite shafts in irons, so here was the line-up. No launch monitor, so strictly visual some 15 yards from back wall net. Impressions of 7 irons:

G410 with Alta CB SR flex: spongy, uneven launchesG410 with ES 760 F2 - crisp, could feel slight launch pop at impactG410 with ES 760 F3 - crisp, couldn't tell much difference from F2G710 with ES 760 F2 - felt odd when addressing ball. Ball flew OK, a bit lower than G410, but absolutely no head feel at impact. Would have to watch ball flight to tell whether I hit a good shot; with my irons I can tell at impact without looking. So what it the deal with the G700 and G710 irons? I became familiar with G700 model when three sets showed up on the used rack at the shop where I got my CB Pro Tungstens. Who uses them? A hollow-body replacement for the GMax?

My CB Pros are also hollow body, but have much better feel.

Exactly - 4 degrees of loft is the standard gap between irons. An average swing speed player would normally see around 10 yard gaps between irons, increasing gaps for higher speed players - normal range of 10 to 15 yds between clubs and the most jacked loft is 4-1/2 degrees stronger. Add the trampoline face COR to get the extra little bit to 20 yds.

And you'd expect the max heights to be the same, give or take - especially for a better player... all the irons and even woods will have very similar max height. PGA Average Trajectories Same Height All Clubs

i always thought that irons that are different in design would require variance of lofts. My point being that a g410 7 iron would have to be lower loft to accommodate the low sole weighting as opposed to a thinner sole iron with a higher loft. So if both were the same lofts the 410 would shorter in carry due to the higher launch with the same swing speed of course. Maybe I’m wrong.....just an observation....

Who uses them. I do.Low handicap older player. Like the extra ball speed. Feel of course is always subjective. I find the G700 irons give excellent feedback on strike location.

Very easy to hit high soft landing shots. Can work both ways at will. Amazing iron for hitting low runners if required. They also spin well and stop even on firm greens when well struck. Use the 780 recoils in regular.

Will go to G710 in near future.

"Who uses them?". I am a 45 year old 8 HCP, with some back issues. Driver SS of 104 mph. I have a set of G710's on order with 2.0 AWT shafts. Coming from Z565's and S400's.

The more golf I play, the more I think we should all play the most forgiving iron we can tolerate looking at!

I'm going to use my new, more forgiving irons and lighter shafts to really focus on more controlled tempo, and less violent transition. I'm looking forward to not having to really "go after" every single shot.

I think these irons can afford me that ability.

@pgatw , @bogey69, thanks for the specifics on the G710s. Don't know why, the club just didn't do it for me.
As per pgatw, maybe I should try it with the slightly heavier 780 R-flex shaft. Might get better feel.
I have had mixed results trying Senior shafts. I seem to get the largest range dispersion with Senior shafts.
That said, my hybrids have 75-gram L-flex shafts, and they work great. All my other shafts are R-flex (but, we know there's no industry standard on flex)
