That one tip that "appears" to work almost always never stick. You would be lucky to last 9 holes with it. When I say if something works or not I mean a permanent lowering of your handicap and not just a hot streak for a bit and then back to your normal handicap or worse.

To be a permanently better player you will require a fundamentally better swing. Either that or improve the heck out of your short game.

I agree with this. I think the true root of some people's problems is simply wrong intentions. The typical p1-p7 analysis is often all symptoms. Monte has said something to the effect of people's idea of what creates speed is the root of their swing issues. I would even add that some people's misconception of how to put the clubface on the golf ball kills them from the start. That will produce all sorts of bad stuff on camera.

But, isn't messing up potential competition part of the game?

Practice it. At the range instead of working on a physical move take time to work on routine. Change focus to the strike, ball flight shape, the target, or nothing at all. Pretend a crowd is watching you and all you think about is showing the crowd how good you are.

Like a musician playing a gig, they are thinking about the song/ end result, not the physical movements required to play the song. Or they aren't thinking at all about the music, maybe focusing on the crowd and trusting they can perform. The latter being optimal.

I'll add the majority of lessons I gave their root fault was a misconception. Many didn't even know hit the small ball first or they try to hit up. Once that was solved a lot of them instantly improved but were reluctant to continue the work. Then a month later they come for a lesson full of internet tips and completely forgot that their perception needed to change.

Then work backwards until you find the ultimate cause of poor strike and ball flight.

Maybe most people dont get lessons soon enough.

They take up golf. Start playing and learning how to hit the ball improperly.

They get better at hitting the ball improperly reinforcing what they are doing. Scores are going down.

Finally they want to really get better and go get a lesson and have to undo all the things they have been doing wrong for years.

And now they have to trust that new awkward feeling swing on the course whille trying not to shoot a 100 so its easy to revert back to old habits that worked just good enough to shoot in the 80s.

I think unlearning is probably the biggest problem.

Every lesson should probably start with " forget everything you think you know about the swing "
