Using only one club, 56°, for ALL short game work...

Hit em good

Recommended Posts

I used to be in the 54 and 60 camp, but after screwing up more shots with the 60 than I pulled off, it left my bag pretty quickly. As a guy who does not hit it as long as I want to, my short game has to be good to play well. When I switched this year to the new Cobra Forged Tec irons, the PW is at 44*. That is strong so I tried a 48 and a 50 gap wedge. The 48 was the distance gap I was looking for on full shots, so I went with it. Now I play 3 wedges, 48, 52, and 56. This works for me on full shots with distances as my main concern. Around the greens though, I usually use the 56 because I made sure I got it in a grind that I could work with, open, closed, tight lie, etc. I firmly believe that the grind on the sole of wedges should be a huge factor in how you set up your wedges in your bag.

I used to think it was best to get good with one club since I did not play much, so I went with a 56* wedge. But I have mental problem (I'm only a 15 hcp) and never hit the ball hard enough to get to the hole. This has been going on for decades (I said I had a mental problem!). I understand that using less loft means you have to read more of the green, but that is minor compared to getting the ball to the correct distance. I usually use a PW now and it is much better. This is partly due to the fact it easier to make good contact with a shorter backswing and secondly, if you blade it, it doesn't go as far, again because you are not swinging as hard. So for someone with my lack of skill, the lower loft is better.

Started that way and sometimes wonder why I ever switched.

Now, it was a 10* (or 12* can't remember) bounce c grind, so open close, etc. Have to be able to control the face and use the bounce. Flops, chips,.etc. Just learn the distances and types of shots but that wedge has to be versatile.

I didn't do as well with full shots with it, but I have since switched to regular iron shafts in my wedges which also has assisted in just making the wedge another club. I play the # with them, then use my wedges (carry three now) for chips, pitches - then 58 for all "high" shot work.

For pitching i use my 56 about 90 percent of the time. I use my 52 maybe 10 percent of the time. So i agree. I don't want or need another 3rd wedge, so it forces me to master 1.

Full shots i never use my 56, just dial down my 52.

this for me right now will be my game plan while i focus on strengthening my wedges in practice this year. I just want to take the mind tricks out and focus on one thing as much as possible and master it. Then i think its easier for me to adjust with another degree in my hand. The variable will be minimal in my head. Still have the same basics right?
