What was your first set of sticks?

OK so we go back a few years. What was the first set of clubs you had. (assuming you can still remember that far back) :)I had a set of Spaulding Tee Flites. Driver and 3 wood made out of some kinda of plastic/nylon material and the 3,5,7,9 irons and putter that came with this plaid bag. Soon graduated to a set of Northwesterns with laminated woods. I am amused at how we now complain because this ball or that ball get's scuffed by the groves on our irons. Back then when we mishit the ball it would have that big ole smile on it and the ball was toast. But honestly does any ball today feel as good an an old balata ball did?

Speaking of Slotline; does anyone remember that mid 80s putter they did? Black, with big gold inserts in the heel and toe bumpers. Sort of a 'son of MacGregor Response ZT and a Ping Anser.'

And the irons they did? Again, a bit of a black and gold colour scheme... sort of a high-tech, glitzy Ping Eye...

What happened to Slotline?

I got a free hand-me-down - Illusions irons (no name brand). Then I bought for $50 a component driver someone built for me (275cc) and followed it with a "No Problems" Dunlop putter.

I moved on to Cobra CXI's, Ping ISI, MacGregor 1025M's, etc..., etc...

I have since then given my first set to a friend who is trying to learn golf...

My first set...

was a Spaulding jr. set. 3-5-7-9 iron, 1 wood and a 3 wood. 1962ish...

I remember almost killing my brother when I took a swing and the head of the 7 iron
came flying off. What's strange is I cant remember my second set...
My first real set was 1971, Wilson X-31's. I still have them...

Founders club was established in 1991 so I am afraid they could not be twenty years old.

When I was a youngster we lived right next to the 14th fairway of the Country Club. I used to sneak my Dad's clubs out of the house and whack balls around the fairway when no golfers were in sight. Can't tell you what they were. In my teens and early 20's, any time I played golf, (Baseball was my game), I borrowed from friends & family, mix & match clubs. My first set was PinSeeker cavity backs,(Great Irons) with Mix & Match Woods, then Titleist blades and Woods when I started to get serious about the game, and now I just bought Ping G10 Irons and Hybrid. May just go the whole route with Ping. Great Clubs! :)

As a kid, I had a Jr set from Northwestern - Chi Chi Rodriguez autograph.

But they were too light once I reall started playing, so in 7th grade I got a used set of Ben Hogan Bounce Sole 1+ irons (3-E) with 1, 3, 4, 5 persimmon woods. My grandmother got them at her country club, so I thought they were pretty hot stuff since I played at a public course. Not very playable by todays standards.

My irons hat the gold inserts with black writing on them and they looked pretty sleek....

Might want to check that. I remember very seriously considering buying a set of Founders Club irons when I moved to Florida, and that was in 1988.

I still use my Father's old John Letters 'Golden Goose', brass flanged putter, now and then, along with his 'Bullseye' brass. I like the 'Goose' better than the Acushnet Bullseye blade. Both are keepers! :cheesy:

Forgot to add that I still play Kosar blades from about 1962 that Emil Kosar made for me. Hope to get a pic of them and post it.

Wow! I can't remember my first set. It was probably some 3,5,7,9 starter set. I got my first "real" set of clubs in 1974. They were the old Powerbuilt Thoroughbreds with the shaft over the hosel. I think I had some Haig Ultra laminated woods.

Just for kicks, back in 2001, I took out an old set of Hogan PCs with Hogan "Speed Slot" persimon woods and started playing a round at my club. After 9 holes, I went into the bag room and got my regular clubs and realized it really is the technology!

First set were hand me down MacGregors from my father, not sure how old they were, but the irons (2,5,7,9) had dimples instead of grooves, and although steel shafted, the shafts were colored reddish brown. Woods were driver, 2, 3. I remember the 2 wood head was quite big for the period they were made.

Then for HS graduation in 1970 he bought me a set of Wilson George Archer models, 1,3,4 woods, 2 - 9 irons.

Still have both sets
