Why Do People Cheat (In Casual Rounds)?

Recommended Posts

As I've gotten a little better the last few years I do this less.   But, I have often taken a few extra mulligans, especially when I am playing by myself.   I wouldn't talk about it to others like an actual score though.   In my mind it ends up being more of a "coulda been" score.   It keeps me wanting to get better because I can see in real time the difference between a par and a triple.   The difference between a 90 and 80 seems like a lot when it's just numbers.  But it might actually only be 3 or 4 shots a round.

Actually the difference between 90 and 80 is exactly 10 shots. (LOL - just kidding. I knew what you meant.)

Reminds me of the time when I heard a newly hired baseball manager say, "If we score 5 or 6 runs a game, and hold the other team to 3 or 4 runs, we should win a lot of those games."

It's nothing but ego.  "I'm a 7-handicap.  I can't tell anyone I shot a 92.  I don't shoot 92's." So they take 5-foot gimme's, play OB as one-shot penalties, magically find their ball, etc.

Why is it annoying? Because it's no different than the guy who won't shut up about the fact he owns a BMW or takes every opportunity to tell you about his 4,000 square-foot house and his boat.

Was paired with a guy like that recently. No fewer than four times he "mentioned" he hits his pitching wedge 145. At the turn he asked me and my buddy twice what we shot, while announcing twice he shot 41.  I was without a doubt the low man in the group and I shot 44, but we simply said "we haven't added it up yet." As we approached 18 he told us 3 times he needed birdie for 78.  After he missed his birdie putt, he announced "par for 79."  As he rolled in his bogey putt he said, "So disappointing...first round in the 80's in a long time." We just smiled at him as he waited for our acknowledgment, which never came, visibly frustrating him.  I estimate he shot 91.

In the end, it truly doesn't matter because he's only hurting himself. But why make yourself look like a ***** when you don't have to?
