New Tommy armour 845 irons or used jpx 900 hot metals

Ok I’m trying to decide between a new set of the Tommy armour 845’s and a used set of mizuno jpx 900 hot metals! Currently playing Wilson d100’s, 16 handicap usually only get to play in summers and once or twice at week at best! Just asking thoughts

There are a lot of versions of the 845's floating around.  Maybe post a photo of the particular 845's you are considering, otherwise we have no idea how they compare.  Tough to go wrong with Mizuno if they are in great shape, and have the right shafts for you.

Played the JPX 825, 900, 919s. Never played a recent version of the 845s. But I’d go with the Mizunos if they are in decent shape and reasonably priced. I assume correct shaft for you in both.

Depends. Do you like the D100s?

 

If so the new 845's might fit your eye better. They will definitely be easier on the wallet.

I think it comes down to shafts and what you like... the new 845s look sharp and have pretty solid reviews... if you want any customization, it’s probably best to go that route... 

 

the benefit of new clubs is they can be built

to your specs... honestly, you can go to

golfworks and build a set of maltby or sub70golf.com and order a set of the 699s.

A few remarks on Tommy Armour: This is a house brand for Dick's/ Golf Galaxy. It draws on the name of the original TA 845 irons, a popular perimeter-weighted club launched in 1988 that became as popular as Ping's earlier Eye2. 

 

The 2020 Tommy Armour 845 irons come in three versions:

• TA 845 Forged: A player's distance iron | only 500 individually-numbered sets were made in this first run, to commemorate the $500 Tommy Armour earned for winning the 1927 US Open. Forged Has some shaft variety with True Temper Elevate 95, Dynamic Gold 105 and PX LZ. Base price: $999.
• TA 845: A game improvement iron. Shaft options are True Temper XP95 and graphite UST Recoil ESX. Steel shafts $495, graphite $595.
• TA 845 MAX: Super game improvement, same shaft options and pricing as base 845.

I hit the base 845 in February, right before COVID shutdowns started. The 7i felt decent - as most 7 irons do. Only problem shaft was a bit light, I was getting fairly high distance dispersion.

 

New 845s something to consider... But universal GolfWRX Warning: don't buy until you hit them.

What sort of nonsense is this? Just check the price on the BST, make sure you won't lose TOO much money and buy away... 

 

Seriously, though... the GG 845s are decent enough clubs if you hit them and get along with them... I don't know what options they have for custom orders or what you need in terms of specs... It's worth taking the time to figure out what YOU need from your clubs... I've done a number of fittings, trials, demos, experiments and BST swaps... I know what I need out of my irons and am comfortable buying things built to my specs.

Performax does the Tommy Armour design and mfg. for this line. They also do Tour Edge, PRGR, OnOff, Yamaha and Ryoma.

and XXIO, lol.

 

Yea they are made for but made with a decent pedigree.
