Cold weather golf

Recommended Posts

I've had two non-shoveling days in the last two weeks. It is really piling up. If we don't get sustained temps in the 40's starting in a week, there isn't even going to be swamp golf in NW Indiana until April.

The real kick in the pants is I planned on giving my tore up shoulder a rest over winter. Shoveling a ton or two of snow every day isn't really helping that situation either.

It finally snowed in a big way, and I thought it would not happen this year, wrong! So golf is now on hold till it melts away and the ground is not soggy, it is going to be awhile. I guess I need to let my shoulders heal up as well, since I don't have a choice. Worst problem is I usually buy more clubs when not playing! Arghh!

Today was perfect. 44, overcast but still light. No rain, mild wind and not another person on the course.

If a course in Japan ever looked like that, the grounds crew would commit ritual suicide in the parking lot.

Are there courses there you can play for $700/year?

Sure. If you play 7 times per year. Ha!

That is a 140 yard par 3 so the tee box is a little rough. But considering it's $13 if you aren't a member, you need to have realistic expectations. 🤣

By the end of the winter, I'm so excited to start playing again that I'll usually find a way to play a couple rounds in the 30s if the snow has melted. The combination of rust and cold means that it's inevitably a complete joke, but it's pretty much tradition for a couple of my friends and me. Under most circumstances, I'm fine with 40 and above as long as the wind isn't blowing too badly.

I have played in snow several times and I played in light hail once. Putting was essentially plinko. It was out of season and we could have just called everything a two putt, but it was way too funny to watch the ball carom off of rice-sized ice bits.

I think the kicker for cold weather is if it’s wet or dry. I’ve played at 5°C when wet, and it’s far worse than the same temperature in the rain.

It recently hit -37°C here in Alberta (a yearly occurrence) and I took the opportunity to go outside and hit some balls to celebrate. Here’s a video of what it’s like golfing on the Coldest Night of the Year:

In Alberta our golf season is fairly short. If we're lucky courses open in late April and close shop around mid October. Personally I'll golf in any weather, rain, snow, sunshine, hurricane force winds. You just have to have the right clothing. Golf is you against the course and the elements.

I’m with you on every one of those conditions except for hurricane force winds and snow.

Got caught in a surprise tornado this last season, and also played a round with some snow on the ground...neither were enjoyable regardless of clothing.

Yeah, probably about 1 in 4 people walking by make comments and everyone that says something thinks it’s awesome!

For me it’s more of a necessity than anything...I don’t have enough clearance in my garage for full swings with any club other than short irons. And my garage also isn’t insulated, so most times it’s actually colder inside it than it is outside.

Well, the snow storm has passed and warm weather is on its way!! Soon it will be DST, and weekly golf returns again. Cold weather is rough on the joints, hard to move the grease.

Thank God!!! Countdown to the thaw is on!! 🙏
