Ping Eye 2 BeCu

Hi all from sunny Sweden

 

I have been taking a trip down memory lane and have bought a set of Mizuno TP-9's and have just bought a set of Ping Eye 2 beryllium irons (very excited)..... the shafts are unsurprisingly pitted to hell. I would love a set of ZZ Lite shafts to put in... but they are thin on the ground!!!!. I have a set of S300's that I want to put in but was concerned about heating up the metal as i was under the impression they were very toxic. Does anyone know if this is the case..... or was just the process of manufacture that was the issue.

I just bought a set for my dad and pulled all the shafts with a heat gun. I didn’t use a torch for the reason you mentioned.   I had no issues or fumes.

okay..... i only have a touch .... but can heat slowly..... and keep the door open!!!!

Wear a mask, keep the heat down and try and avoid rubbing down. I think it's the dust which is the real problem.

the torch vs heat gun makes no sense.  You need a certain amount of heat in the hosel to break the epoxy, it's going to get there either way.  If you're not handling dusty BeCu all the time, it's nothing to worry about.  Throw on an N95 if it makes you feel better....we should probably all have a couple of those lying around lol

As Pete says I think its the dust and not the fumes that was the issue so take the greatest care in cleaning the hosels after you have the shafts pulled.

Heating doesn't release beryllium particulates into the air.  Use a torch like all good clubmakers should and pull the shafts.  There is no risk what so ever.

Things go better with Coke...well if you put the heads in Coke for the 3 days, they will be shiney again, and the Coke will have Safely eaten away any material that was gonna be dusty! 😀

Grinding, cutting, filing, sanding BeCu and creating fine particles is where the danger is.  Heating to appropriate temperature to break epoxy bond is not a problem.

I’ve pulled BeCu heads before, and the dust is what Ping has always claimed to be the issue. The biggest issue that others on here and myself have found is that the BeCu does not seem to conduct heat the same as regular steel and can sometimes be more difficult to get loose than most other heads. I had a couple on the last set I did that I finally took down to my local shop and had him finish with his heavy duty Mitchell puller.
