Hitting many fat shots

Recommended Posts

I havent been on a course in 6 months with lockdown but hae been hitting off my range mat into a net with 6 irons.  I have been working on my swing hard over the lockdowns and using cameras a lot.

The thing is I can tstop hitting fat shots.  Well I would say 40% of my shots are fat on the mat.  I am thumping the ground about an inch behind the ball.

I know the golf swing and all the reasons I know for hitting it fat I am not doing.  My plane looks good, My swing centres are stacked on the downswing, my sternum is directly over the ball at impact.  My weigh is left early on the downswing and stays there.  I have shaft lean.  My hands opposite my left leg.  My ball position is good opposite left ear.  I even looked at AMGs stuff and tried all their fat fixes.  Nothing works.

I am not casting.  I am keeping my spin angle.  I even tried hitting small swings with my feet together with a 8 iron and hit about 20% of those heavy.

I am a decent level player (believe it or not!)

I have run out of ideas how to fix it.  My angle of attack is also decent . -4 or so on trackman.

Anyone any ideas that maybe I havent thought of?

Post a video and I would suggest front on as well as dtl would be useful. Otherwise your gonna get random guesses.

Stop hitting on the mat and hit off grass. The mat can make you hit it fat. It happened to me because of how much forgiveness it can give depending on the mat. I have fiberbuilt one that’s 10x10 with putting holes and I did the same. Practiced all over the winter and then went to grass to test the swing. Fat city. Now I only use my mat to video tape me and doing some minor hitting.

Stipulating to the fact that this is just a guess (I like to see my name in a thread):  Are you completing your rotation, body too close to the ball and it's stopping you from turning completely?

Harry Redknapp on signing good-looking Portuguese winger Dani, he told reporters:

"My missus fancies him. Even I don't know whether to play him or f**k him."

You provided ALL the things you're NOT doing in your post, yet you're not properly hitting the ball 40% of the time.  To me nearly half the time you are NOT hitting the ball, but the mat.

I disagree with others that the mat is partly to blame.  When I learned the game I spent 75% of the time hitting off mats.  To prevent the jaring nature of mishits on a mat, I quickly learned how to shallow out my swing to sweep the ball, yet spin it, vs hitting 1-2" behind the ball, chunking it and rattling your teeth and bones.

As other said, post a video to get a more realistic assessment.  as it is, even though you say you're a decent player, your self-assessment is not at all accurate if 40% of the time you're missing the ball.

Except that you can hit behind the ball on some mats and hit a shot that you may not perceive as fat.

Sure that's possible, but not common, least for most "decent" golfers.

It's easier to mishit shots off turf and not realize it.  That is what digger club heads are designed to do.  Turf is more forgiving.  The main benefit to practicing on turf is it's like playing conditions.  Mats are like hard pan, and why I can hit the ball off the cart path, and hard pan doesn't affect me.

This happens to me when I slide towards to target on the downswing rather than turn (left hip back).  Even if I slide a little my right side tilts too much and I bottom out behind the ball.  For this to work you can't sway off the ball during the backswing or you will be forced to bump towards the target on the downswing.  Some instructors advise pushing of the right foot in the downswing to help "support" the right side and stop it dropping too much.  I struggle with this thought as it sometimes ends with EE.

For me, loading without swaying and then left hip back on the downswing results in the best contact.

Fat shots happen when your balance is off or you don't get to your left side fast enough.  At least that's how it is for me.  I do a ton of balance work at the gym so my chances of mis hits lessen.  I also make a concerted effort to at least get to my left side with hip rotation quickly.  Now my normal miss is slightly thin.
