I'm hoping mid to early April, I'll go through some muddy grounds just to get out there.

On Feb 14th, I was in Hamilton for work and saw a few people on the course. Don't think it was open for a winter round but if warm enough you'll see people on the Chedoke course.

So when does golf season technically kickoff in SW Ontario? I'm looking at moving to the area, and curious when. April, May?

Depends on the area you move to, quality of course you want to play and the conditions (weather and course) you're willing to accept.

There's been years where I was hitting balls outdoors (off mats) in late February and playing in March.  The off season is getting shorter, and can be a little as like 3-3 1/2 months off if you want.

Most (almost all) private courses won't open until sometime in mid May unless it's an unusual year as the course conditions mean more than early season F&B revenue.

It's here the season is here. I played Easter weekend a bit soft but good to be out. This week in the Golden Horseshoe it's going to be like 20+ all week so I best courses will open sooner and be busy.

If anyone is thinking of going to Tarandowah, might want to read up on this thread:

https://www.torontogolfnuts.com/forum/golf-discussion-forum/the-19th-hole/3657727-golf-membership-vs-public-booking

Sounds like the ownership might have pulled a fast one on people who paid for a membership in April.  Not a good look for them.

New ownership from what I understand, that's a pretty terrible way to treat your loyal members. I have played it in the past but will stay away. Some courses are going to be in trouble once the covid golfers go away. Pretty unreal that the guy repping the course would talk like that on a public forum. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

I liked the one post quoting a pro:  "When the boom ends you're going to wish you never s&^t on your best customers."

The strange thing is, it's been new ownership for over a year, and until this, they appeared to really be a good operation.  The guy who posted that thread was singing his praises right up until this happened. Unreal.

Just reading through that thread. Ugh, that's absolutely sickening!!

Great point by the guy who said that if the course fails they'll just close down and build housing on it. It's almost like some courses with housing developments surrounding it are looking for an excuse to shut down Golf and build. This looks like one of those examples.

But it's in the middle of nowhere.  You have a decent chance of coming across an Amish farmer with his horse and buggy heading tot he course.  A guy had a field and decided he wanted a golf course there.

It'll be a century before housing comes to that area to the degree that its worth closing up the golf course for it. It would be better off being returned to a crop producing field at this moment in time.

Haha...Oh, Ok. I've never been there obviously. Just thinking of a couple of other courses who seem like they don't care much about Golf and look like they're just looking for a reason to build homes.

That is quite sickening indeed, just read through the Tarandowah thread also and this guy is the owner of the course unbelievable. You would think an owner would be smarter than publicly fighting on a forum when everyone knows who he is.

Sounds like a real piece of work, I surely will not support a club like that. Pretty sure this course needs people more than vice versa.

Looking for some help from someone in the Toronto area... I am playing Glen Abbey in a couple of weeks, we have a corporate event there. Just wondering: does anyone know what they have in terms of rental clubs? I would assume they have something decent, but just wondering if anyone would know? I don't really want to pack my bag all the way there for one round of golf, so if the rentals are half decent, I may just do that. Does anyone know? Thanks!

Best to call and ask, Glen Abbey has been all over the place lately. They may have something they may have nothing.

So just to follow up on this, we played Glen Abbey last week, and it was really fun. I had never played there before and the course and the facility was really nice. The rentals turned out to be Taylormade Stealths. I liked the woods, the irons were not really my cup of tea, but at least they were modern and decent. I actually really liked the putter, it was some big Spider mallet thing, quite a bit different from what I normally use, but I putted well with it. The course was really fun, I hope to make it back out there again next year as this was an annual company event type of thing that I played in. Side story: we got to play the 18th hole twice, it was a shotgun start and since we started on the back we just played our way back in to the clubhouse after we finished. I can say I birdied 18 twice, once from the Tiger Woods bunker on the right haha. Granted I think he hit 6 iron onto the green from there (they say it was one of his greatest shots of his career), and I had to chip in from the front edge after chopping it out, but still was pretty cool.

Good to hear you enjoyed it, I actually may play Glen Abbey this weekend since the prices are decent right now and if they're still shotgun starting on the back I wouldn't mind playing 17 & 18 twice.

The course better be nice for $240 per round, Lol!

Would be cool to play on a course with so much history though. Hopefully I can check it out one day too.

Funny enough their prices have been going down, I played this past weekend for $125 all in, another buddy booked a time last minute for like $110 all in. I think they realize their course isn't a huge draw like before so need to fill time slots but honestly I can book a round on Saturday or Sunday on a Friday Evening which is unheard of in the GTA.

Still not a $240 course I'm sorry and playing it again you realize how awful it is for watching golf as well on the back stretch.
