Seve's driver

Somewhere in my library I have the drawings from Macgregor of how Seve wanted his EoM 60 built.  Black head, the colour of the stamping fill etc but can't find it.  Does anyone have it please?  I'm working on a set of EoM 60's for someone and want to do them is "Seve spec".

Seve used Joe Powell, Paul Gibson and I think Toney Penna pre metal days. Powell was black, firing pin and a shaft that had virtually no flex.

Any details on the Paul Gibson model? I have 3 Gibson's including "The Beast!" Excellent grain, super solid block, hazarding a guess at 8* loft and with a 45" re-bar stiff shaft.

Not even dreaming of any connection to Seve but always speculated it must have been made for a very powerful player. Too much club for me!

Here it is as bought compared to my standard Hogan Apex driver! Can't believe anyone needed to add lead tape - since removed!

The EoM 60's are for a young pro I think we'll make a very big name for himself at some stage.  1, 2 and 4 woods that I have had re-shafted with X100's and am restoring.  The "Seve Spec" is the plan.  Black means that you won't see the grain but with white paintfill and the "firing pin" I think they'll look pretty good.

Early days as it's only the 4 wood and 2 coats and a first pass at filling the stampings but I think they will come up well.  Seems Seve had a good eye.

Looks good. I love firing pin inserts. Two of my favourite drivers have them, or rather one does and the other has a faux firing pin (second pic). The first one pictured has even sprouted mini firing pins!

I like the swing thought of hitting the ball like a hammer head strike, which the firing pin encourages.

Mizuno Craft Model 951. Pretty much the apogee of Mizuno Persimmon woods, although they also released the excellent World Master woods in Europe (but not in Japan). Not sure which are better, but I think the World Master models are rarer.

Seve did sign with Mizuno in the 70’s.   Picked this one up a few years back

Dave Wood at Wood Bros built several custom drivers for Seve.

 

Here’s a Seve Texan with Seve’s favored Mac EOM60 insert. Dave made 3 or 4 of these for Seve. This one includes a slightly heavier brass sole plate for higher trajectory. 
 

I once had the opportunity to follow Seve for all 18 holes of a practice round before the Houston Open. It was an afternoon and only about 10 people noticed him go out. It was an unforgettable experience! Seve talked openly to the fans following. He was playing a black MacGregor with a black fiber EOM60 insert.

 Holy Smokes! I always thought persimmons were as much art work as they were tools. This is gonna sound stupid and there’s no logic to it but a left handed one might look even better! Being right handed myself normally left hand clubs look goofy to me but definitely not this one.

Dave Wood once restored a set of MacGregor SS1 Velocitized woods for me.

 

He did the work correctly, actually unscrewing the dowels that penetrate deeply into the head. He cautioned me about acquiring refinished Velocitized and EOM60 MacGregor woods. He said he wouldn’t buy them in his Classic Club/Texas Golf Co business because refinishers generally sawed off the dowels behind the insert because it was quicker - and didn’t require the extra effort of unscrewing and then screwing back in + perfectly aligning the face grooves of the dowels with the insert grooves. 
 

I’m not sure if makers other than MacGregor and Wood Bros actually used head penetrating screws in their bullseye inserts - or simply constructed non-screw in inserts that looked like the original MacGregors.
