Full time sunday bag use?

Recommended Posts

After seeing this thread I, like a few of you, am starting to realize people have varying definitions of “Sunday Bag.” The Vessel above is a full blown carry bag to me! Nice looking bag though.

To me a Sunday bag does not have any legs. Regarding straps, I don’t agree that it has to have only 1. Ping and titleist both make Sunday bags with 2 straps.

For those of you using bags without legs, what do you do in the morning to avoid dew getting them all wet?

My two cents (as a caddy) the ping craz-e lite is the best overall lightweight stand bag. Adidas use to make a bag called the Adizero. It has legs and two straps but was very minimal and wonderful to carry. Pity I haven’t been able to find one anywhere.

I've used trestle sticks and it does the job but can be a little more fiddly.  I also used a Ping Moonlite which has the waterproof belly material.  It looks like the new Titleist premium carry bag has something similar but with little nub legs that would actually be better because it could keep the club heads out of the wet grass as well.

I just found this old school Ping sunday bag at a yard sale for $10, took it out for 9 on a whim. What the hell. How have I not been doing this before now. It was so damn light and easy. Beats my hoofer or push cart by a mile.

I have friends who swear by the pushcart but I think I found my preference. Gonna replace it with a new Moonlite now that I have proof of concept. haha.

My input doesn't mean $#!+, but you should not replace that bag with a moonlite.  This old one has way more character and only cost you $10.  Stick with IT!

Haha I would be inclined to agree with you but I really would love two straps and this thing has some serious mold stains that I can't get out. I'm keeping it for sure though!

FWIW, I just got a Moonlite.  I have always liked the idea of carrying but my back isn't as keen.  I carried mine yesterday with 13 clubs and I have to say, this was the best carry experience I have had yet.  The dual straps make a huge difference coming from single strap carry bags like the Jones.  Club tangle is minimal, and everything was easy to get to.  It even holds my 36 oz Hydroflask in the drink pocket.  It holds just what I need and was a real pleasure.

Man, I just got mine too. I walked with the full 14 and a lightweight hydroflask, 4 balls, range finder, and an umbrella. Holy crap. You're exactly right. It's the best walking experience I've had too. Significantly better than my Hoofer Lite. Felt like 5 pounds lighter.

The only thing I might whip up are some home made trestle sticks for the range or other times I might want them.

Does the right arm strap on yours stick up for easy pick up off the ground?  I think it's supposed to, but mine kind of sits flat.  No matter, it wasn't that big of a deal really, I can use the occasional stretch out there!

It's funny, I had a Hoofer Lite, too.  But the tangle was awful.  The regular Hoofer is only a half pound heavier and has a ton more room.  The Moonlite is a much better option than the HL to me.

Can the Moonlite be converted to 1 strap?  I'm down to 8 clubs in my Hoofer Lite and it's a great walking experience, but thinking of going to a single strap and dropping a couple of more lbs.

Did you consider the Titleist Premium Carry?  Looks a little sleeker and 3 way divider might work better when carrying a half set.  I might try that one from amazon since price is good and free returns.

Yes, second strap snaps on and off, very cool design honestly.  For a simple bag, it seems like a lot of thought went into it.

I gave the Titleist a thought but I wound up getting the Moonlite in a trade here so I wasn't picky.  The 4 way top on the Moonlite is surprisingly accommodating, though I only carry 13.  The only gripe I would have about this bag is the lack of the spine up top but overall, it can do everything I need.  Really cool little carry.

It does! I noticed that the first one I picked up at the store did not though. It seemed like it had been sitting on the strap for a long time though, like it had bent it back down. It's a nice feature but not critical. And I kinda wonder if I'd like the main strap even more if it didn't have that added structure built in to allow it to stand up. Either way, a tiny detail.

I want to like the Hoofer Lite, I've been using a Hoofer to some degree since roughly 2004. But this one is just too damn heavy. It's like 5 lbs. And I really want to stay as minimal as I can. Storage doesn't matter as much to me. Moonlite is really coming in perfect for me.

It can! You can just undo the clips on the second strap. Real easy.

I have a Moonlite and love it. I went to the hardware store and purchased a small aluminum rod and used thread in four spots to sew it in to create a spine along the top. This stopped the droop when carrying or standing up.

This is friggin genius. The droop isn't terrible, but this should be a really cool add on.

you don’t happen to have tips on how to sew it in/pics, do you? If it had this spine it’s 100% perfect.

A thread about sunday bags, and no mention of a vagabond? I must be getting old. They show up on Ebay from time to time.20210802_180623.jpg.d4955b82f5639a50c40901c2c755ffe0.jpg

Looks just like a Jones.  Which came first, Vagabond or Jones?  Or did Jones make the Vagabond?

Don't know. I remember vagabond being the cool player's bag when I was in college (late 70's) but the luggage company in Portland that made them (Badgely, still around I think) quit making them, maybe by mid 80's. Wasn't familiar with Jones back then. Don't know Jones history either. They do look somewhat similar, I grant you that.

I will try and post some pics tomorrow night as I’m traveling and don’t feel like going out to the truck to do it now.

it took me about five minutes and completely solved the annoying droop problems.

Here are some photos of where I made some stitches to hold the aluminum rod in. The rod is in a rip stop nylon sleeve. The top is tucked in right under the top Velcro’s strap. Looks, feels, and performs like it came from the factory that way. It’s been a couple years but I believe I took a hammer and pounded the top couple of inches flat to be lower profile under the lip of the bag.

I just got a Penfold Sunday bag, and it's so comfortable and easy to use I am considering ditching my Ping Hoofer Lite for good.

Penfold looks interesting. Do you miss not having a side pocket anywhere for a light rain jacket or pullover or something? The larger pocket near the bottom, is it 2 separate or one pocket? How is the divider system at the top? In the photos it looks like it would shift around a bit. Is it solid and rigid or a different system?

I have a Jones Original and Titleist Premium Carry bag on their way to compare, will post reviews when I have both.  I'm looking for a very small bag to hold 8 clubs, a water bottle, snacks, 3 balls, wallet, key fob and phone.  Will be keeping a Hoofer Lite for cart use and/or days I go with 12 clubs.  To answer the above comment, I don't want the larger footprint of a Titleist Carbon, Sun Mtn 2.5+, etc for this minimal setup.

Edit- received the Titleist Premium Carry.  It has great pockets, but the double straps are very awkward for this type of bag.  It's definitely going back as the Jones Original is much better for what these bags are trying to do.  That said Jones might be going back as well as the Hoofer Lite does a 1/2 set of clubs better than either Sunday bag.  The Jones is cool though, so might keep it as an option.

To be honest I bought it to see if I wanted to jump into a Mackenzie.

But having used it now for 10 rounds or so, I've just bought another one as I like it so much! There is a small side pocket which I use for my phone & wallet, a hook in the main pocket for car keys but that's really it. I've tied a jumper around the handle when needing it, I would miss an apparel pocket but that's the whole point of the bag - minimalism.

The divider is good, but it isn't rigid enough to stay in the 'X' as advertised. It separates the clubs nicely but the top (which I keep my Dr, 4w, 2i and putter in) does 'droop' into the others.

I've had several comments on the bag when playing, most assume it's a Mac when they see it.
