The only thing I would have changed was the stands, and I know it’s not practical.  I’d rather have seen bleacher sections like the one in the movie, or people bringing their own chairs or blankets.  Yeah, it would have drastically changed the attendance but would have added to the atmosphere they were going after.

Great game. Until the bottom of 9th😳.   Looked to be a boring game, turned out to be a thriller.  Dam Britton. Walks always come back to haunt you.

Thriller at the end no doubt! Wow. Talk about a movie script ending. The visuals as the sun was setting and just after we’re stunning.

Such a great game. MLB said it was the most watched regular season game in the last 16 years. They should do it more.

As a a jaded  former MLB fan, it was a great event. Sadly the game was like 3.5hrs and while there was a lot right, that's just wrong.

I thought the whole setting was just spectacular. The players walking out of the corn, the sunset was incredible, the game was great. My home of iowa sure gave itself a good look on national TV. Props to the MLB. 
 

So I have heard talks of doing this every year, do any of you think that would “water down” the event? IMO, I think I would like to see it every 5 years or so. The issue with that is the maintenance of the field or however they would pursue that.

I'd love every year. I love when hockey does the winter classic at a ball park outside

MLB has already announced it will be an annual event with different teams every year. Human nature being what it is, it will lose a little “shine” the more they do it. One a year isn’t that much though IMO.

Yeah IDK. Makes me wonder how many members here will sit and watch 4+ consecutive hours of a golf tournament… which most average people (casual viewers) will say is more boring than watching baseball. 🤔

Yeah the first time was magical, so the rest wont be as special.

 

That said I still think its great to do it annually.

I'd like to see them go back to the San Fernando Valley where the Bad News Bears (Matthau 1976 flick) was filmed.   Maybe get a sort of gutta percha ball to compensate for the smaller playing field while disallowing all Prius' from being driven for 3 working days to accurately replicate 1970s era smog..

Can't do that either, except for maybe Masters Sunday.

 

I just miss the days when a NL game used to take about 2.5hrs, AL was about 2.75. It didn't used to be 3+ hours. You'd think with the all strikeouts it wouldn't be like this and the pitching change rules haven't helped (but were necessary).

 

Are the players more talented today? Yes. Is the game as good as it used to be? Don't think so...

When did games last 2.5hrs on average? I’m 48 and don’t remember. Or more like I wouldn’t know because I never went to a game and thought about how long it was. I just go to the games/watch the games and enjoy them. I’ve never been to a game and said to myself “my god, when will this end?!” Haha. (Unless we’re getting destroyed out there) But yeah the ppl that complain about modern baseball all have the same gripes. They Google the stats. Game time up, strikeouts up, all the guys either strike out or hit a HR and sabermetrics have ruined the grand old game!!! Haha. Sure. All I know is I still watch a lot of really exciting games and quite regularly I’ll add. I’ve even personally been to 2 A’s games that were less than 3hrs. If it lasted another 20-30 minutes… So what. I woulda had just as good of a time! Also still see A LOT of base hits, doubles, walks, amazing defensive plays… And yes, awesome home runs! Ok, I’ve done my bi-monthly rant in support of baseball 😂 Carry on 😊

Look here and expand the rows.  I love the game. I'm 47. I played it. I watched it religiously every night and used to go to 20+ games a year...but when it's now as long as a football and is a game of nuance, strategy and not constant movement/action, there's a reason casual fans are losing interest and older fans are frustrated.

 

Another reason for losing fans is it's a specialization game from youth baseball all the way up. As kids you played baseball in spring, soccer or football in fall and basketball in winter. Most kids played it. Now it's mostly about travel ball and year round play...and only the best kids play or kids with the parents with the deepest pockets...but that's another thread.

 

So the game is losing older fans and not gaining as many new ones. The irony is the game (business?) did it to itself.

No need to look. I don’t look at stats. It’s ruining the game! 😂  Like I said. I know ALL the reasons ppl spout. I personally still really enjoy it. That said, I am a very positive person, tend to see and focus on the positive side of things and it’s just a fun pass time for me. So, to each their own 😊

This is me at the last game I went to. Epic walk off against the Padres. The game lasted over 3hrs and I had a total blast with my son. Wouldn’t trade it for anything!

I feel ya. I stopped watching the PBA when guys started bowling with TWO hands! Back in my day men could bowl continues days using only one!!  🎳

All good man. I'm an A's fan as well. Was going to games all the way back to Rickey Hendersons rookie year through 2000 till I moved away. Lots of great memories at the Coliseum.  Play off games, world series, bench clearing brawls, opening days, a Nolan Ryan no hitter, Eric Chavez hit for the cycle, taking BART to day games as a 14 year old with no parental knowledge, the old real bleacher seats for $3, BP ball hunting. Great times

I was also at that Nolan Ryan no-no! He was with the Rangers. Remember exactly where I was sitting even. Us A’s fan gave him a standing ovation.  👏🏼
