After many years and many hundreds of solo rounds waiting behind threesomes and foursomes, I've concluded that an awful lot of people feel that "golf" consists of play-acting out all of the stuff they see from the golfers on TV. Psractice swings, waggles, visualizations, pre-shot discussions, backing off, fidgets, stop drills, tugging at shirt sleeves, the whole Tour Sauce package. Including the insane practice of waiting to even touch their bag, much less pull a club, until the previous player has gone through his whole insane performance.

 

It's actually kind of hilarious to see a group of hackers playing the back tees, taking turns watching each other go through the whole rigmarole before each shot, posing as they hold the finish, maybe even a few club twirls...as they watch one 220 yard tee shot after another find its way into the woods. Hilarious and kind of pitiful. And slower than molasses flowing uphill. 

 

I remember 30 years ago the stereotypical thing a weekend golfer would look silly aping from Tour players was tossing grass into the air to check the wind before hitting. In the group I played with back then, the tossing grass thing would usually be shouted down by the rest of the group, "C'mon, who do you think you are, Jack Nicklaus?". How quaint to think of that now.
