Why would DJ have not played in a major? He has a lifetime exemption to the Masters and an exemption to the US Open through 2026. The PGA Tour doesn't control any of the Majors. Pretty easy to see a world where players play the PGL and the Majors and that's it.

You are correct on those as well as others that have won. How will others get in if not in the top 50 or whatever in the rankings when their points go away?   That league not being given ranking points has already been announced.  Subject to change of course but if a Xander Schauffele wants to get in how does he do so?
pretty impossible for me to see a world where players play just that league and majors.

We will all have to wait and see how this squabble plays out.

The exemption system for the majors are controlled by the individual majors. Right now, they use the OWGR (and Tour status) as one of many exemptions. The majors will adapt their qualifying criteria to ensure that they get the best fields they can.

Two of the four majors have a well-established qualifying regime that any golfer can enter.

Yes, and if the PGL happens and top guys are in it, I’m sure they will be welcomed to the majors.

But this brings in another challenge for the PGLs.

The guys build their season schedules with the majors in mind. They have great flexibility in where and when they play. And, while it’s not ideal, they can decide not to play an event/change their schedule if they feel it’s best for their major prep.

The PGL would need to accommodate this flexibility, the players travel preferences as majors approach, but also have events that best prep them for an upcoming major.

How will they know a name player is still one of the “best” if playing pgl only?

There is a lot of unknown at this point. Will players want to be forced to play a18 event schedule not of their choosing is certainly near the top.

You could easily make "Top 25 in any of the last 4 majors" an exemption criteria and get just about everybody you'd want.

Most people realize golf matters four times per year, and that’s it. The rest is just exhibitions for lots of money. They don’t move a players legacy much at all. The PGA Tour hates this, because they own none of those four weeks and never will.

Four weeks/year isn’t bad by the way. Most sports have one champion per year. Golf gives us four, and it’s borderline oversaturated as there’s a significant drop from the Masters to the PGA Championship.

I agree with everything except the Masters PGA comment.

The Masters has a lot going for it, and we all love it, but it has the weakest field of the 4 majors.

Im curious if the perception of the PGA changes with the new schedule.

It's hard to argue that but networks have been showing live for decades.  Somebody is watching it.

It’s not about the number watching, it’s about advertising to the demographic the sport appeals to.

“Money is the answer“

Yes and the PGA Tour signed new media deals for the next 9 years for

$8 billion.

They ain’t playing with a pop gun here ; )

With the new increase in fedex to $75MM, 18MM for the winner, a guy wins the fedex, had a good year, and wins the PIP could make close to

$40MM

Not to mention the tour can do all kinds of stuff the shower the top guys with cash.

Heck, they could just give $10MM bonuses to everybody in the top 5.

Best bet is for the PGL, if they really want this “global tour” that’s sustainable, is to take a long term approach and invest overseas (which they are doing) and try to sign golfers out of college that haven’t gone pro yet.

Cause the PGA Tour ain’t letting any of the top guys out of their sight.

There's a big difference between 1 guy having a chance to win $40M and a journeyman or mid-pack guy making a guaranteed $10M for playing for a couple of years on another tour. Get in, get out, retire.  They said the same thing about the NHL vs. the WHA back in the day and yet some of the greatest players to ever play including Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Frank Mahovlich and many more, jumped ship when given the chance. Wayne Gretzky signed his first pro contract with the WHA not in the NHL.
