Wilson Staff CB Irons - Anyone????

Took them out again today.  I'm just not a fan.  They're okay, but out of the 7 sets of irons I own I'd probably play these in the 5th slot.  It could be that I went to a R300 shaft instead of the typical S300 shaft that I play.  Probably going to sell them off.

I'm pretty much a sweeper/shallow divot player and I just seem to be hitting 8/10 of them that "feel" thin, but the flight path/distace is good.

Well, golf is a funny game. I went out and broke 75 today in my first round with a D9 Forged/Staff Model CB combo and was coming on to post about how great these heads are and saw you are having the opposite experience.
 

For sure no iron is for everyone. Are you checking your strikes and dynamic loft on a monitor? In my rotation these are elite, right at the top. I am somewhat of a sweeper (a little more down into the ball, but not steep) and I can’t get over how great the Staff Model CBs feel. I have them with Modus 120 shafts. Perhaps shafts make the difference. The s300 always feels heavy to me. The CBs are an excellent combo with the Nippons. I have played it seems like every iron under the sun and to me these feel great — not just good, but great. The club goes right through the turf. The sole camber seems to glide. The first time I ever hit these my initial comment was, “Now that is what a proper iron feels like!” No injected polymer, no trampoline face, but a nice pure feel and good carry. 
 

Another big plus is accuracy. For me this is a true “goes where I am looking iron.” I think that has to do with the shape. They are not the most forgiving iron I have owned because they are more compact than most heel to toe and the CG is probably a little higher than a lot of irons, but they are the most Tour level of any iron I have in how consistently they perform. Very precise.

Ok, I gave them one last try today.  Brought out the 7i and did a comparison with a few others.  Things were different today.

-I hit the CB's the best overall.  They were the most consistent, even on a big time toe strike.  I still felt like I was hitting most of them thin, but damn if they didn't go straight and high still.  I have to really concentrate on hitting down on the ball with these to get that 'pure' strike... maybe that will be good for me in the long run.  I hit a couple fat and they didn't lose a ton of distance there either.

-2nd place was the Nike VR TW with steelfiber shaft.  I still like the flight path of these the best but mis-hits with the CB was better.

-3rd was 718 AP2.  A little more forgiving than the Nikes but I can't hit these straight to save my life for some reason.  I seem to pull EVERYTHING.

-4th was the good ole MP33's.  When I'm playing consistent I love everything about them... but they don't love to be hit anywhere but the center/center-heel.  Toe shots are better off being kicked down the fairway.  Fat shots too. 

-Last... MP18 SC.  I used to absolutely love these clubs but they don't do anything better than the other 4... although the feel is pretty great on them.  Ball flight is pretty low and they're less forgiving than the 33's.

 

So for now I'm going to game the CB's and TW's.

 

Ranking purely the feel from best to worst I'd go...

-VR TW (graphite shafts might skew this)

I decided its all about the shaft. I soft-stepped some Nippon 950GH and the feel and trajectory was night and day different. Only down-side was needing 10gm tip weights and lead tape on the head.

what shafts are in there? I’m seeing them for 599 now-maybe they increased price?

IIRC, I got mine from Maple Hill for $549 with R300's.  S300's were the same price at the time (roughly 3 weeks ago).

Anyone play the set gap wedge in the 2021 Staff CB?

 

I'm trying to decide between getting a 50° Ping Glide 4.0 to match my 54° and 58° Pings, or if I should get the 50° Wilson Staff CB set wedge. I mostly use my current 50° (Mizuno S23) for full shots (my 110yd club), with some partial shots thrown in, but because I never use it around the green it would seem like the Wilson set 50° might be a better fit. However, I'm curious what the performance is like.

I had the set gap wedge. It is just like the pitching wedge, only with more loft. Really good for chipping around the green or for full shots. I think if you use it mostly for full shots it’s nice to have a gap wedge that looks like the rest of the set. But that’s just my preference. I’ve done fine with a different wedge at that spot as well. The 2021 CBs are a fine set of clubs.

Thanks for your response! I mean, I’ve done fine with my current 50* Mizuno S23, but why would that stop me? This is GolfWRX after all. 
 

I’ll probably pick up the set gap wedge online before they’re all gone.

I've preferred the set gap wedge for a while now.  50* bent to 51*.  I think the combination of (usually) a shorter hotel and lower swing weight (than a typical "wedge" 50*) have done wonders to the gap.  I have gamed the Apex MB '18, Apex MB '21, Ping i210 (briefly) and now Staff CB set gap wedges.  I wish more blades came with the set gap wedge (Staff MB!!!).

I had the gap in my set and found it was a really good club.
