Wilson Staff CB Irons - Anyone????

Jjones519a

Recommended Posts

Hello

Ive been looking for a somewhat more forgiving set for this year.

Ive tried all the new Hollow Irons (225 pro, 790, PXG, Cobra, ... ) And I hate them.  I hate the feel.

The GOAT of irons for me were the MP53 and Original Ap2.  Both Slightly larger Players irons.

Also S300 is my shaft of choice for now and forever.

So I was looking around and saw the Wilson Cbs... Slightly bigger than most players irons, Stock S300, Beautiful Chrome Finish and Reviews are amazing.

But i dont know anyone who plays them.   Any reviews? Any Pics compared to other Player irons??

Thanks!!

Rick Shiels was really impressed with the Staff Model CB.  He's not the best ball striker, and he found them plenty forgiving.  Another iron brand you might consider is Ben Hogan.  Fantastic performance at good prices.

They are beautiful and feel great, but they are not any bigger than other players irons. They are a very compact head, which people either love or hate. I also didn’t find them any easier to hit than the Wilson Staff Model Blades, however those blades are surprisingly forgiving.

how would they compare size wise to T100 ?

the blade length of the CB's is one of the shortest of any brand. The soles are on the wider side with a lot of camber which slightly gives the illusion of the heads being bigger then they are but they are very compact at address. I actually preferred the MB as the blade length is slightly longer and with a thinner sole they setup better for me, both of them are some of the nicest irons around and well worth a try.

Hands down one of the best cb’s on the market.  As stated above, more squat and compact shape in comparison to other irons in this category.  Great sole design, fantastic transition from hosel to leading edge and wonderful feel.  If I had the correct shafts they would prob still be in the bag.  Some of the best looking mid irons I’ve seen in a long time!  I say do it.

Piling on with the love, the Staff CBs are great.

They are, as others have stated, one of the smaller heads on the market. I switched to them from Z785s for that reason. And the sole is really forgiving.

I play the Staff Model MB 5-PW, and recently bought the Staff Model CB 4 iron. Agree with the others - it's no bigger than peer irons but it is pretty fantastic. I use S300, works well for me.

For it's worth, Wilson has also been fast in filling custom orders. My blades in the fall took under a week; my 4 iron more recently was 10 days. And that's with me in Canada and the clubs coming from Chicago. Given the horror stories I've seen on here with some other brands, I was pretty impressed by that.

They’re beautiful, as nice a looking CB as I’ve seen. The Staff Model Blades are only more beautiful IMO because you just can’t beat that classic Staff muscleback gorgeousness. Wilson makes a lot of great equipment. I think the D9 driver looks great.

I only had a handful of swings with each of these irons but I didn’t find any difference in difficulty to launch. Granted, it was on a screen. I’d say the SMB is similar to the Srixon 965 in being slightly bigger for an MB, but still quite compact compared to most. I agree that the CB looks more compact than the blade. Not by a lot but that’s what I thought.

I played the CB last year and went to the z785 lol.  I wanted to love them, but I actually liked the V6 better.

To the OP, these are not forgiving irons. Small compact heads with a tradition loft.

I was at the pga superstore in Greenwood Village Colorado a week ago and hit them, I went in to hit a few irons and a tour pro of 10 years handed me the Wilson cb to hit, said it’s what he plays. I hit them and was shocked, they felt super good, I would have never ever thought it or even given them a chance… If I could afford another set I’d get them.

Over the last two seasons I have owned a full set of Wilson Staff Model Blades and a full set of CB's.. both are all stock specs with DG S300's both sets are the same lofts, lengths, lies. I did try to combo 4-6 CB and 7-PW blades.. that worked well for me, but I tend to use the Wilson Staff Model Utility 18° and 21° instead of the long irons as they flat out work for me. I also have Mizuno MP-20 MMC/MB's and while the WS Blades are no where near as "Mizuno soft" as the MP-20's, they feel more solid to me. Like others have said, the WS CB's are a touch smaller heal to toe, they are minimally longer hitting and higher launch, but it's really not that much.. maybe 2°more on launch, and 4 yards on carry. I just traded off my WS CB's to a buddy, he's only hit them on a sim but he likes them better than the ZX7's he had before.

And I will agree, Wilson irons are going to be pretty hard to find to demo in most cases, my first set of WS blades I owned was a used set, purchased blind without hitting any first.. was glad I took the chance to try them.. they are my preferred irons to play. Nothing wrong with the WS CB's, had I never hit the blades I'd be fine with playing the CB's.

Where can you get them with other shaft than the stock dg. Would like a dg 120 or with amt would be even better. Can you recommend a place?

Wilson makes such great irons. The V6's and the Staff blades were two of the best sets of irons I've ever owned. The CB's are just as good.

Can confirm. Very compact, squat, but not fear inducing in the long irons like the V6s were. The V6 4i is a butter knife and I was worried upgrading to the CBs wasn't going to change much. New set has just slightly more of everything: camber, offset, top line thickness, that makes it feel inviting when setting up to the ball.

Agreed. The CBs were made specifically to be blended with the blades.

Feel is always subjective... but these a great. They are absolute butter when you flush one, and responsive (but not overly harsh) when you don't. I mostly see that on a toe strike I'll lose 7-10ish yards compared to getting one right down the middle.

Wilson's player irons tend to rate very low on the Maltby MPF rankings, but very high with everyone that tests them.

Obviously, blade length is what ranks them with such a low MPF.

With most reviewers loving them, it makes me wonder if Maltby is leaving something important out if the playability equation.  I mean, a hockey stick length iron head would be the ultimate "playable" iron according to Maltby, but would be a disaster on the course due turf interaction, and a few other factors I'm sure.
