Anyone not carry a 3 wood / best 3 wood of 2022

One thing I noticed, is you gotta hit it frequently to keep up the right feels and confidence in it. I play some really long sim golf at times, and it’s a necessity for me now. On the course, not so much, but now the history is there, so confidence is high and I can hit it as needed, without reservation.

I carry a 3w now only cause my bad fits 15 sticks if it didn’t it would not be in the bag. I took the leap and got the apex uw 17 after demoing it. Got it with the stock rdx xstiff but changed it to a GD VR 8TX playing at 42.25” and been a nice replacement 3w. Just as long on average with better dispersion and way easier off the deck. While my 3w an epic flash sub zero with GD IZ 7TX was a middle of the tee I’m just not a strong fairway wood player to hit it consistently off the deck.

Also have a Apex UW 21 after it as my 5/7w as well. While I always got along with 5w they go too high for me and lose dispersion. Found the UW has a boring penetrating window to keep it straighter and I’m happy it overall and finally I have a srixon ZX Utility iron 3 20* turned up to 22.5 to round out my top end of the bag. But I’ll always tinker as all WRXers do 🤣

Mini driver. If you setup your driver for a fade or draw, you can setup the mini driver for the opposite, giving you two options off the tee. I've got a shaft that launches a bit lower in mine compared to driver so it's a good option into the wind. It's also great to have a second driving option in the bag if the big dog is playing up. I've played comp rounds with mini driver only and scored very well. I find it also allows different bag setup options for different courses or if you're swinging bad and want a temporary change.

I don’t play a 3 wood, don’t really have the need for one at my home course. I play driver then a 17* and 21* hybrid.

In your case, maybe adding a second club that’s similar to the 5 wood in distance but goes about it another way. For example, if your 5 wood is a high, floaty shot add a utility iron or hybrid that gives you a lower more penetration by flight. I’ve experimented with setups like this in the past and have had success with it.

SIM2 Rescue 17* || Ventus Blue HB 8x

X-Forged UT 18* || MMT UT 105tx

T100/620MB 5-9 || DG X7

SM9 47 || DG X7

SM9 51, 55, 59 || DG X1

BB8 Tri Wiz Cu Insert || BGT Stability Tour

I used to carry a 5 and a 3 but sold both a few years ago and moved to a 4. Choked down with a soft swing, I can use it for 215-220 and playing it forward and keeping it low with a hard swing, I've landed it up to 260 (had a slight wind behind for that yardage so it's probably closer to 250 really). Some day I might go back but for now it's still working for me.

I kicked my 3 wood out of the bag a couple years ago. It use to be my best club in the bag but then every time i used it I was in trouble. Plus most of the courses  I play if i hit a decent drive i can get home in 2 with a iron. I do carry a Ping crossover just incase I need to get something with a little more distance.

I think you said it all with how little you would put it into play. I had a few situations and distances that called for a 3W, but once I got my driver dialed in, those scenarios off the tee and subsequent long distances off the fairway shrank even more. So I took the 3W out in favor of a 5W and I’m much more confident in going with it as an option than I did when a 3W might have been in consideration.

You sound pretty comfortable, so forget about the 14th club unless you find a need to fill with a specialty club.

I dropped 3W for a 2nd driver.

I have a 3W but basically wanted it to be a drawable driver, and it rarely got used off the deck.
