Driver swing speed in relation to 7 iron swing speed.

I am right around 25%. Stock 7 iron is 91/92, driver I live 115-117. Could I swing both harder and faster? Sure, but now strike is compromised. Same reason, just like @MonteScheinblum says, no reason to hit X club 5 yards further. That is what the next club in my bag is for.

My PW is my 140 club and never 1 yard more. Could I jack it up to 150? You bet I could. But on the course there is zero reason to do so. Staring at a 145 yard shot, grab 9 iron and go 3/4 swing. Flight it down, more controlled, and basically becomes a one hop and stop on the green.

Driver 118

7 iron: 99

I hit my irons for distance control.  Unless I'm in between clubs for irons, I never max out.

IMO, 18% is too small of a gap.  That’s either swinging 7 iron too hard, or driver not hard enough.

I messaged Sasho about whether the inputs here are playing speed or max speed, and he said it's max speed.  Since our playing speed is closer to max with a driver vs. a 7 iron, I'm thinking he would be close to your 20-25% playing speed number.

Howard Jones has discussed the carry distance with driver should be right around double the carry distance of your pitching wedge (i believe assuming 46*). That 2:1 ratio will let you know if you are potentially missing out on some distance, or if either are not an ideal fit. As far as swing speed ratio with any of the irons vs. driver, there doesn’t seem to be as direct of a ratio. Also driver swing and iron swing can differ greatly for some.

Checked my club speed chart for this and got 21.6% - post below.  It assumes the same "release rate" for every club (angular velocity), and has been a pretty darn good speed predictor for me.  That's inline with the 20-25% people are saying here, but for me actually indicates "max" with all clubs:

This is really fantastic.

so recently found a dilemma in this. Before covid I coulda sworn I was seeing an average of 85 mph with my 7 iron. After covid I am consistently an 80.

i swing my driver 100 mph and that has been consistent before and after covid.

what’s changed?

i have started taking 3/4 shots to control my trajectory and ball flight.

so I went to club champion today to get fitted. They tell me a c taper light R is the shaft I should be in. My ego is hit hard.

I thought, “damn I’m 28 years old, work out a ton, and am stronger than a regular flex. What happened to my club head speed in relation to my game.”

While I’m getting more accuracy and distance, I am now worried, what will happen if I get back up to that 85 range? Will I need to get back into a stiff shaft? Did I waste my money?

i have been practicing at slower speeds to improve my ball striking and now I am consistently an 80. Do I just accept that?

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
