Guaranteed HIO or Guaranteed Bogey Golf?

Recommended Posts

Neither.  I like to go out and play with the abilities I have.  And while I understand that a HIO is luck/odds, its still you hitting it and not some outside influence that makes it happen.  As to the no worse than bogey...  When I manage to play a round where my worst score is bogey, I feel a sense of accomplishment, that my practice and dedication has paid off.  Why cheat that?  Both of those scenarios would end with me quitting golf, and I like to play golf...

Pretty simple choice. 10 cap and above, take the bogey - most high scores come from blow up holes. 10 cap and below, take the HIO - hit that level, and you have few doubles or triples anyway, and are guaranteed at least two shots a round.

In terms of scoring, the bogey golf at worse is what I would take. A hole in one only picks you up 2 strokes on the round. Now imagine if you have automatic two putts on every hole at worse with the chance of a better score based on your skill level. That is pretty much a green light to fire at every pin. Swing for the fences, tight pin is no longer that scary. If It were me, I would ask the genie if I can have automatic two putts at worse for the round.

That's exactly the supposition posed in the original post:

Would you rather take the hole-in-one guarantee, or the "never shoot more than bogey" guarantee?

What i meant to say was automatic two putt on each hole. I corrected my post.

I think a HIO every round would be almost a curse, not a benefit. Pretty sure my regular group would get sick of it quickly [even for free drinks]. Nobody has that kind of luck, so there would be a lot of notoriety and suspicion on how it is accomplished too. I don't want that.

I think if someone was guaranteed to have a HIO every single round, I'd put the over/under on 18 months before they quit the game.

Could've used the "nothing higher than a bogey guarantee" today...3 duffs into some trees, then 2 shots trying to get out of a bunker led me to picking up my ball after 10 strokes.  Bleh.

Reality check: In golf, there's no guarantees.

There's also no such thing as a genie either.  The entire purpose of the thread was to eschew reality for a few minutes and put the reader's mind where everything else is the same except for a supernatural force giving them the choice between 3 possibilities.

Who wins in a fistfight?  Satan or Old Tom?

I don't know that I would choose either of those. Now, if the choice was "every shot in middle of fairway" or "every GIR", esp every GIR, or "never over 75", I'd take one of those before the HIO or never more than bogey. As others have said, I often break 90, and if I don't on a particular day, that's because I either make dumb decisions or terrible swings.

Hypothetically, you find a claret jug tucked in the rough of your favorite course.  You pick it up and accidentally rub it, and a genie that looks suspiciously like Old Tom Morris pops out and grants you a wish:  You can either have a guaranteed hole-in-one in every round you play for the rest of your life, with the caveat that the rest of the holes are back to your normal skills...or, you're guaranteed to never shoot more than 1 over on any hole for the rest of your life, with the caveat again that each hole is your normal skill level and you have the possibility of shooting as good as you possibly can.

I'll take the guaranteed bogey max and I think it would be even more fun than the guaranteed ace.

Say I double-cross one off the tee on a par-4 OB, hit my 3rd in play, then hit a mediocre approach. I'm then guaranteed to pitch in for a 5. Or, say it's a par 3 with water in front. I catch my tee shot a bit heavy and it's in the drink. I head to the drop and chunk a wedge (because of course I do) that's looking wet too. I am guaranteed a max of a 4, so what happens? Probably hit a magic rock and bounce onto dry land, or a bird picks up my ball and drops it somewhere safe, and then I'm guaranteed to hole out from there.
