Coming to Scottsdale for a hockey team reunion.  Looks like we'll have a couple days to golf.   Where should we play in mid May?     Also, what are the prices in May around the 19th?

Without knowing budget, skill level, time available, etc then you should start here:

mid May is when the rates go to the 2nd to lowest of the year - caveat, the courses here have raised their rates earlier and higher than ever before; so history is no guarantee for this year.

Secondly, you will need to pay attention to the course conditions post for 2023 - May is starting of aeration/maintenance for golf courses, you need to know when they are performing maintenance so as to know you won't run into less than ideal conditions.

Thanks, didn't think of the aeration.  Will definitely check with courses before booking.

I looked at a few high end publics and the prices go way down in May.  $165 to play Quintero, $162 to play SunRidge.   All the others I looked at can't be booked till 90 days out so don't know the prices.  Thinking We-ko-pa as well.   With prices that low seems silly not to play them.  I

How is Grayhawk?  That might be our best bet for one of the days because it's only 15 minutes from the house we rented.   Trying to limit time away from the party at the house so going to golf first thing in the morning and hopefully close.

2 really good courses; plus you have Troon North (2 courses) just a little farther away; and you can go to TPC (2 courses) a few minutes away too.  Plenty in that area you will be in.

TPC is actually really close to our house, but I've always heard that it is overrated and only cool if you have fans packing the stands.

I played it a few summers back. I enjoyed my round there. It's a solid course with some fun holes (15 and 17 specifically) and it was in perfect condition. "Overrated" is a relative term. I think if you go into it expecting it to be the same atmosphere as you see on TV at the WM then you'll be disappointed.

I wouldn't call it a must play, but if it's close by it's worth playing in my opinion.

Yah, if you are trying to stay close Grayhawk, Troon, and TPC are really good options.  TPC stadium is a good course since its renovation a few years back (not a great course).  If you are familiar with the WM open it is always a fun 18 to play some well known holes even without the crowd.  Most of the hate is deserved, as it is priced to compete with Pebble Beach.

if you had to choose between Quintero and We-ko-pa for one round which would you pick and why?

Depends on what you want. We-Ko-Pa Saguaro is one of the best layouts in the state. Solid mix of holes with wonderful routing, it just flows well and “fits” the land. Scenery is great as well. Nice restaurant on site and casino is just a minute away.

If you’re more into stunning vistas and elevation change then Quintero is for you. Knock on Quintero is it’s very penal if you’re off the fairway, very lack luster straight ahead par 4’s and repetitive down hill par 3’s.

Both will be in excellent shape, with a slight edge in conditioning going to Quintero.

It’s completely subjective. I always recommend Quintero to out of town visitors for the experience of the isolation, vistas and conditioning.

As a local I’d play Saguaro 99/100 times, after a few rounds Quintero is played out.
