The Cult of the Detroit Coney Dog, Explained

The coney dog is a variation on the classic American hot dog; its distinguishing characteristic is a chili topping (generally referred to as coney sauce). Roadfood founders and culinary road trip warriors Jane and Michael Stern explained their affinity for the coney dog in their 2009 book 500 Things to Eat Before It’s Too Late: "These are not aristocratic sausages like you find on the other side of Lake Michigan, in Chicago and Milwaukee. Far from it: they are cheap tasting. But we mean that with all respect; when the craving strikes for a brace of them, no prime filet mignon can satisfy it."

The term "coneys" is used to refer to the dogs themselves and also serves as shorthand for the type of restaurants in which they’re commonly served, which are ubiquitous in Detroit. So-called "coney islands" are typically Greek-American owned diners that in addition to coney dogs, also serve an eclectic menu with everything from gyros and Greek salad to burgers and breakfast plates

How is a coney dog prepared?

Its construction is simple: A beef hot dog is plopped on a steamed bun and topped with chili sauce, chopped raw onion, and a squiggle of yellow mustard.

Good pic but you gotta go buried with the onions...way neater if you're eating in your car!

Bun then onions, dog, sauce, and one stripe of yellow mustard!

Thanks for telling us how to properly pile a Coney NCL.

Minor variation: mustard goes down first, on the bun. Then the dog, followed by chili, onions and grated cheese.

I mean, come on, it’s a hot dog. Care must be taken in its proper preparation.

My preferred hot dog is an Andouille sausage or bratwurst on a hot dog bun, with a light drizzle of mustard ("Excuse me, but do you have any Grey Poupon?").  And a few chopped onions.

3 years just outside Detroit but...my whole life I've been eating michigans!

Car hop service and my order is "2 with, buried".  A short wait and goodness arrives.

Lunch on a Wednesday.

Hot dog. I take mine with mustard, relish, and cheese.

What do you guys like on your hot dog?

Macaroni and Cheese for a side dish.

Dessert

I say to our Head Baker Michelle, "Thanks for the Key Lime pie Michelle, it's one of my favorites."  Michelle answers back, " oh that's not Key Lime LP, that is Atlantic Beach pie. It is similar to Key Lime, but Atlantic Beach pie uses limes and lemons and the crust is not graham cracker, but crushed saltine crackers."

Who knew? I prefer Key Lime due to the graham cracker crust, but the Atlantic Beach pie was still tasty.

PXL_20230621_152045076.jpg

On the Hot Dogs of course all the way or Eastern NC style--- Chili slaw Mustard and onions. I am also fond of Chicago style dogs though no one I know of down here does them.

Atlantic Beach Pie--- Have been around both Atlantic beaches (the one in NC and the one in SC) and never seen or heard of that style

That’s dope!

Reminds me back in HS we would always hit the diner after hours for a burger 🍔 right?

So, there were 2 diners right across from the street from each other. One was modern, clean, sharp waitresses, decent clientele lol. We usually were in decent enough shape to go there.

But, if we were really sloppy we would go across to the “Roach Coach” 🤣

This place was a dump, you’d definitely get your burger well done and never think about eating the cole slaw!

This is the Roach! It was…demolished 🤣

I will tell you this--- If you come to my house and eat a Hot Dog there will only be one of two kinds Nathans or Hebrew National. Now out at the course or a racetrack I will eat any kind. I used to love those from the Arsenal in Gaffney SC. They were cheap dogs with the red dye running out but man good chili and slaw. They alsomade them for all of GHS home games and for the racetrack on Saturday night

Yep was checking out the WC just now and it seems you guys are getting it. Down here it is spotty. The sun has came out and it is humid as heck. I went out to the course for a little while to try a new heater I built. It is a little old V-Steel 5 wood with a fuji shaft. Hits decent but that 7 wood is still my go to. I also tried one of my other Bobby Grace putters. It was originally a Belly with the thick shaft and is center shafted. I cut it down and slid a Winn Grip I had laying around. Putted well with it and the weight is right. More than likely throw them in the bag for the Ryder Cup conclusion if we get to play

Ever order that at Clare and Carls NCL?

Poutine - Wikipedia

Poutine (Quebec French[put͡sɪn] (11px-Loudspeaker.svg.pnglisten)) is a dish of french fries and cheese curds topped with a brown gravy. It emerged in Quebec, in the late 1950s in the Centre-du-Québec region, though its exact origins are uncertain and there are several competing claims regarding its invention. For many years, it was used by some to mock Quebec society. Poutine later became celebrated as a symbol of Québécois culture and the province of Quebec. It has long been associated with Quebec cuisine, and its rise in prominence has led to its growing popularity throughout the rest of Canada.

Best hot dog I ever had was on the campus of Arizona State.  The place would slit the dog so it would lay flat, grilled and served on hamburger bun and had a bar for any and all toppings.

Oh Mr. BSC you got me thinking about my favorite diner in the North East.

Back when I lived in the DC area the boys and I would head up to Atlantic City for some gambling every year. Once we got past greater Philadelphia we crossed the Delaware and got on Hwy 40 towards AC. Going to and heading home we would always stop in Elmer, NJ at the Elmer Diner. It wasn't one of those shiny silver buildings anymore as it had been remodeled. The restaurant served delicious diner food. In those diners their menu's feature like 200 items. Gotz to have some pie Yo !
