Putter grip rotating on it's own, yes it is!!!

Crazy but not crazy. I've been using the same Ping Kushin putter since the late 80s. Not sure when exactly I noticed this, but last year I wanted to upgrade my grip to a mid sized. I noticed my stock grip had rotated at least 20 degrees or more. I couldn't believe it, and I tried to see if it was loose, and I tried to turn it back, but no go. It was solid. So I put on a new mid size grip. I use good tape and solvent. The grip was on solid. Would have to break my hand trying to turn that grip. I used the grip for a few months and didn't like it, and wanted to go back to my original grip.  I used a grip remover. It came off nice, so I saved it. Lo and behold, the mid size grip had rotated. I showed it to my friend, and he was baffled too. Neither one of us could budge the grip. It wasn't loose. Sooooo, with great effort I got that grip off, cleaned up the old grip and installed it perfectly straight, and showed my friend and he agreed. That was a couple of months ago. Last week out of curiosity I looked at the grip and you guessed it, it's turning. No other clubs have this problem. I've been replacing my own grips on and off for 40 years.  What the heck is going on?????? How can a grip rotate by itself.  I'm retired, and play 3 times per week.

The shaft is loose in the head.  Solution is to pull the shaft and re-epoxy it.  Now, for the bad news.... In those days, Ping used a ball-bearing to lock the shaft to the head.  If they used this method for this head, no amount of heat or force is going to get that shaft out to re-epoxy it.  The usual method is to drill out the bottom and push the ball bearing out, but this is an old Kushin so drilling from the bottom is not really viable.  Or send it back to Ping and they might be able to fix it without breaking the bank.

Loose shaft or it's a deildegast (Norwegian ghost) and Karsten seeks something...Like you should buy a 2023 Kushin 4...

Since you can't drill it, some people reportedly have had luck freezing the putter, for several hours, so the bearing contracts and then trying to pull it off or heating it and pulling it off.

I haven't tried it but there are threads on this site about it.

Post a picture of which putter this is.

Is it this one?  If so, your options just got a lot easier.  Shaft will come off with a little heat.

If it's this one, lots of luck

Pull the grip again and bang the shaft b u t t on the ground. Then, using the thinnest cyanoacrylate adhesive (superglue) you can find, Shoot it down beside the shaft all the way around where it enters the head. Prop it against the wall overnight at 70 degrees and the problem will be solved. The thin stuff will go into the smallest seam and solidify. Superglue is fine for a putter shaft. Especially a Ping locked in with a ball bearing!

I would be inclined to "friction fit" it.  By that I mean, take a very thin piece of metal and wedge it in between the shaft and the head.  It should be enough to secure the shaft without messing around with glue.  This might sound easier than done, but that is what my first attempt would be.

Thanks for the help. That's why I like this site. Suoer knowledgeable folks here. Looks like door #2, so I'm screwed, kinda. I gave it a little twist, and it's aligned again 🤣. Can probably do that for a while. There's plenty on ebay too, pretty cheap last I looked.

Stop throwing that putter around. You already have a kink in the shaft…

Now that you have it fixed, enjoy. Make lots of putts this year. 👍🏼

If you don't mind replacing the shaft cut it off as close to the head as possible. Then get a Dremel and a few course grinding stones and go to work on the bearing. It's actually pretty soft and grinds away easily. It should take two grinding stones and about 15 minutes. No damage to the head and you can then get it re shafted and re gripped.

Only one dent in 35 years. I thought I was doing pretty good 🤣 Definitely going to be treating it gently from here on in. Even found a spot in my bag where it won't contact other clubs.
